It is a tragedyWilliam Shakespeare’s story in five acts. It first appeared on the scene in 1607 or 1608, and was printed in the First folio in 1623. The tragedy follows the relationship between Cleopatra and Marc Antony from the Parthian war to Cleopatra’s suicide. The antagonist is represented by Caesar Octavian, triumvir together with Marco Antonio and future first emperor of Rome. Antonio lives in Alexandria, a slave to Cleopatra’s beauty. Forced to return to Rome for political reasons, he puts an end to the discord with Caesar Octavian by marrying his sister, but the peace does not last long, because Cleopatra’s jealousy, and the memory of her sensuality, recall him to Egypt.
