This Christmas, ‘friend’ has become a keyword. Because the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa , has placed it at the center of the debate by explaining the measures agreed by the Government and the autonomous communities for the celebration of these Christmas holidays and because it has been placed at the center of the controversy. Andalusia, for example, does not agree to open dinners to relatives and the word itself has sparked widespread controversy (jokes included) on social networks.
But what exactly is a relative The dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) states that ‘relative’ refers to “a person close to another in relation, friendship, treatment or trust”.
For Word Reference, ‘close’ is synonymous with family and relative but also “near, close and immediate”. And, according to The Free Dictionary , ‘relative’ refers to a relative or from the same family, information shared by the Google search engine , which retrieves two results: the first one as an adjective, which refers to that [relative, person ] that maintains a close relationship with a certain person or family and, the second of them, a noun referring to a relative or family member.
Are there really so many doubts and polemics about the definition of this word

In all cases it is understood as a synonym of family, a concept that the RAE defines exactly as “belonging to a family”, so it is evident that the real problem stems from how we understand the meaning of ‘family’ and that is, in most cases, it extends much further beyond the blood ties themselves… And it is a problem that is not resolved by BOE or by BOJA.
In fact, one of the meanings defined by the RAE on this term is “group of people related by friendship or treatment”. Wouldn’t it be a totally valid synonym of what we understand as ‘relative’
Apart from polemics and terminological debates, according to the document on Public Health Measures for Covid-19, this ChristmasEntry and exit in the autonomous communities and cities will be limited between December 23, 2020 and January 6, 2021, “except for those trips, adequately justified, that occur for any of the reasons provided, as well as to attend to the places of habitual residence of relatives or close friends”.
A close person is someone with whom we have a special affection, whether or not there is a family bond in the traditional sense
The Minister of Health Salvador Illa has reiterated that these festivities have a very special component and “relatives or close friends” should be allowed to spend these holidays together designated days.
Therefore, prudent action remains in the hands of the citizens.and the realization of the fundamental displacements , in order not to aggravate the pandemic situation, since this is how the minister transmitted it “with this it is clear that at Christmas we stay at home to celebrate the holidays with the new ones and they will only be carried out all the movements that are essential”.
In practice, the concept of “close friend” is so broad and subjective that it has worried the health authorities, when it comes to preventing Christmas from ending by unleashing a third wave, and has made communities such as Andalusia have chosen to eliminate such casuistry . The underlying problem, however, goes beyond the terms: controlling that the recommendations are strictly complied with will be a challenge for everyone. In Spain, in Europe and in the United States, for example, where the alarming data that has happened to their Thanksgiving party has already been made public.
