All companies that supply Amazon for Jeff Bezos branded products. Many are also Chinese. Names and details of suppliers
Samsung, Panasonic, Philips. And then Micron, Byyd, Mibelle. These and many (many) other Amazon suppliers, who unveiled them after the accusation of selling with private brands belonging to the Amazon brand, and clothes produced in unsafe factories in Bangladesh. AMAZON AND PRIVATE BRANDS
In recent years, Amazon, the e-commerce giant, has also put various objects, electronic devices and clothes with private labels, belonging to the Amazon brand, on its website dedicated to online shopping.100 BRANDS IN THE FASHION SECTOR
Amazon’s current offering in the fashion world, for example, boasts over 100 private labels. And to understand how much the giant led by Jeff Bezos points on this business, it is enough to know that from 24 to 27 October 2019, in Germany, the first Amazon Fashion event dedicated to jeans was held. EUROPEAN BRANDS
In Europe we do not see all these brands. Amazon, as Fashion Network writes, has brought only 5 brands to the Old Continent market: Ruth & Fable, a women’s brand of garments suitable for special occasions; Find, more oriented towards a streetstyle proposal; Meraki, which offers basic garments; Iris & Lilly, dedicated to lingeri; and finally the Aurique brand, which offers clothing for sports. THE ACCUSATIONS
And it is precisely the fashion sector that in recent weeks has come under the magnifying glass of NGOs and various associations. The accusation against Amazon was that of selling garments made in factories that ended up in the so-called blacklist, or considered structurally unsafe and not respectful of workers’ rights. As the Wall Street Journal denounced, for example, a girl’s yellow top sold on the American market came from a blacklisted factory in Bangladesh. THE LIST OF SUPPLIERS
Amazon verified the allegations, removed the yellow top from the sale and then published the complete list of suppliers to ensure greater transparency. A list that, as reported just a few months ago by John Boumphrey, vice president of Amazon Fashion Europe, was secret. The company would never disclose the production areas of the company’s fashion products. WHERE AMAZON SUPPLIERS COME FROM
Now Amazon, surprisingly, has published the list on its website. What emerges
The PDF has 102 US companies and 12 Mexican manufacturers, as many as 505 Chinese companies and 29 companies from Taiwan, 168 Indian companies, 23 from Bangladesh and 6 from Pakistan. To these must be added 55 suppliers from Vietnam, 31 from Japan, 29 from Sri Lanka, 19 from Indonesia, 14 from Thailand, 13 from Malaysia, 13 from the Philippines, 12 from South Korea, 7 from Cambodia and 4 from Madagascar. COMPANIES OF THE OLD CONTINENT
For the Old Continent, there are instead 10 companies from the United Kingdom, 9 from Poland, 4 from Italy, 11 from Turkey and 2 from France. ITALIAN SUPPLIERS
The four Italian companies that appear among Amazon’s suppliers are: Soffas Converting, a company founded in 2001 from the merger between Soffass and Finepaper, which produces tissue paper reels and manufactures finished products for the national consumer market with the Regina brand, headed by to the Sofidel group; Fippi, a family business founded in Italy in 1970 that produces diapers; Intercos Europe, specializing in cosmetics and skin care products; and Intercorse Europe, a company based in Dovera in the province of Cremona. THE CRITICISM
The publication was not enough to stop the criticism. The NGO Human Rights Watch, in fact, argued that the list, thus published, is not enough. For example, “the indication of the production area is missing, making it impossible to distinguish a textile manufacturer from a cosmetic specialist or an electronics factory”.
