The new Minimum Interprofessional Salary, SMI 2021, received a rise of 15 euros thanks to the agreement reached between the Government of Spain and unions. As a consequence, the stipulated figure becomes 965 euros. The approval of this increase has been on the rise since the last weeks of 2020, the date on which the debates began on whether it should be kept at the stipulated 905 euros or should be increased.
One of the promoters of this new figure has been the Minister of Labor and Social Economy, Yolanda Diaz, one of the strongest advocates of unfreezing the SMI and of this rise; and the unions, which advocated an increase that reached 1,000 euros.Against, the CEOE was placed whose position was the rejection of a new rise in the SMI.
Retroactive agreement: from September 1
The increase in the SMI may already be perceived in the next payroll and, however, the increase in the Interprofessional Minimum Wage is retroactive from September 1.For its part, the Ministry of Labor must exceed the limit of the established deadlines, which are very tight. In the first place, you must take the measures out for public consultation, which would add up to 10 days. However, next September 28, the Council of Ministers will officially communicate the increase in the SMI 2021.
The Minister of Laboralready recognized in 2019 the impossibility of living with 950 euros per month, so the latest increases were still insufficient. At the beginning of 2021, the SMI was established from January to August at 950 euros per month, with a distribution in 14 payments. However, if the company chose to pay the payroll in 12 payments, the figure increased to 1,108.33 euros per month. On the other hand, the daily amount was established at 31.66 euros. With the new increase, the annual gross becomes 13,510 euros and 32.16 euros for activities in agriculture, industry and services. The next payrolls will already have a SMI of 965 euros.
Since 2011 there have been several rises in the SMI, the only exceptions being the years 2012 and 2013. We start from abase of 641.40 euros in 2011 up to the current 965 euros as of this September.
Similarly, the Spanish Government has also proposed, thanks to this latest increase, new increases in the SMI for the years 2022 and 2023, although for the moment the exact figures for these future increases are still known. If an increase of 31 euros is considered for the year 2022, placing the SMi at 996 euros, and in 2023 a similar figure of 31 euros, becoming 1.07 euros per month. Although the main idea was to agree in the last meetings on the rises for the next few years, for the time being only the rise in the SMI has been agreed upon from September.
