Historical notes, curiosities and practical info: what to know in brief
The Mole Antonelliana, designed to become a synagogue, was purchased by the Municipality of Turin in 1878. In 1904 a hurricane overturned the statue of the winged genius, affixed to the top, which was replaced with a star. In 1953, however, a storm knocked down over forty meters of the peak , which was replaced with a metal structure covered in stone which led to the reinforcement of the entire structure. In 1961, on the occasion of the centenary of the unification of Italy, the famous crystal lift was inaugurated, which leads to the top of the Mole, an unparalleled panoramic point over Turin. Since 2000, the Mole has also been the emblem of the seventh art thanks to the Cinema Museum, which develops on its three internal floors, designed to surprise and amaze the visitor. Since 1953 the museum has been a member of the Federation Internationale des Archives du Film and in 1992 it became a Foundation thanks to the support of the Piedmont Region, the Municipality of Turin, the Province of Turin, the Cassa di Risparmio di Torino and the National Cinema Museum Association.
