Try to imagine a Real Madrid Barcelona in the Champions League final . O Brazil Argentina at the end of the World Cup . Or, to stay in Italy, remember what Juventus Milan was like in 2003 in Manchester. It will be a first. Never in the history of South American competition had Boca and River met before in the last act of the Libertadores. The Millonarios(so called for the huge economic patrimony especially in the ’30s) they qualified after eliminating the Gremio . After the 0-1 home defeat, River won 2-1 in Porto Alegre with a decisive penalty scored by Gonzalo Martinez in the 95th minute and awarded with Var seven minutes earlier. The protests and the vibrant climate on the pitch generated 13 minutes of recovery. The referee quad left the pitch escorted by police in riot gear. At 81 ‘Gremio won 1-0, then the incredible comeback hosts in the final match.
Less throbbing, but still fought the qualification of Boca. Here too the Argentines got the better of the derby with the Brazilians. The Xeneizes(the Genoese, founders of the club) have, in fact, eliminated Palmeiras . After the 2-0 achieved at the Bombonera, Boca drew 2-2 in San Paolo with the decisive goal of Pipa Dario Benedetto . The 2-1 penalty for the hosts scored by former AC Milan player Gustavo Gomez was worth nothing .
For the first time, therefore, the Superclasico will award the Libertadores Cup, the South American Champions League. The Boca River rivalry is over a hundred years old, the first match is dated 1913. It is not the first time ever in a final. In 1976 I awarded the Argentine championship with the victory of Boca, while this year the two teams competed for theArgentine Supercopa , with success of the River. In 1968 the game was marred by the tragedy of Puerta 12 : there were 71 deaths due to a fatal crowd that was created at gate 12 of the Monumental stadium.
In the 2004 Libertadores semifinal, after the goal Carlitos Tevez imitates a hen in exultation at the Monumental, just as River fans are made fun of. The apache, which now plays in Boca, was expelled. In 2015, however, in the second leg of the round of 16 at the Bombonera, the match was suspended at half-time because the River players were attacked with a pepper spray by an ultras from Boca. The Millonaros won that Superclasico at the table.
In 2004, the British newspaper Guardian drew up the list of 50 things to do before you die. In first place there is the Boca Juniors River Plate derby in Buenos Aires.
