Never in the history of South American competition had Boca and River met before in the last act of the Libertadores. The Millonarios(so called for the huge economic patrimony especially in the ’30s) they qualified after eliminating the Gremio . After the 0-1 home defeat, River won 2-1 in Porto Alegre with a decisive penalty scored by Gonzalo Martinez in the 95th minute and awarded with Var seven minutes earlier. The protests and the vibrant climate on the pitch generated 13 minutes of recovery. The referee quad left the pitch escorted by police in riot gear. At 81 ‘Gremio won 1-0, then the incredible comeback hosts in the final match.
