After graduating from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in literature, writer Lauren Weisberger landed a job as assistant to Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour, where she worked for just under a year. Wintour, a legendary figure in the world of fashion and publishing, had already cultivated a reputation as a demanding and strong-willed boss. Weisberger began work on the novel “The Devil Wears Prada” several years after leaving Vogue, and the unfinished manuscript made the rounds of publishing houses and film production houses. Elizabeth Gabler, then head of Fox 2000, was immediately hooked on the idea. The idea was so strong, the concept so clear and so tempting, that she immediately thought of making a film out of it, regardless of how the manuscript would go.
However, it took several attempts to get the script right. Even though everyone involved in the project believed in the potential of the story, the development process was difficult. The early drafts of the script were too satirical, with Andy’s character obsessed with wanting to take revenge on his cruel boss.
Director David Frankel suggested shifting gears to focus on the success (and sacrifices) of a successful woman like Miranda in a male-dominated world. The producers hired a then little-known writer, Aline Brosh McKenna (who would later write several screenplays and co-create the TV series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), who spent more than a year working with Frankel on a new script, which would free of much of the content of the last part of Weisberger’s book. The legendary actress was everyone’s first choice to play Miranda. Streep immediately signed on, certain that the film “The Devil Wears Prada” would be a success. But she was immediately disappointed by the economic proposal they made of her. A casting agent working on The Devil Wears Prada filmed an audition with Blunt, who was casually dressed in jeans and flip flops because she was late for a flight back to London. Despite her character’s American origins, she did the scene with a strict British accent, and the video won Frankel by storm. Once the producers of Eragon officially turned down Blunt’s casting, Frankel quickly sent her back for a meeting with Fox 2000 executives and finalize the deal.
