Jago is an Italian artist and entrepreneur. He mainly works in sculpture and video production. Numerous national and international awards. Today Jago lives and works in Naples, frequently moving between the USA, China and Italy. What art is for you
Art changes uses and customs, anticipates the times. It can be a means to participate in social dynamics, to change the point of view on reality or to condition political choices. In the immediate future, however, the artist creates his works because he is moved by the desire to be able to express himself.
For a long time the artist relied on, albeit reluctantly, an art advisor to sell his works. Many great artists understood only on the verge of death that it was not him who made a profit but his merchant.
From the beginning of my career I have not been interested in this type of landscape. Art must take the side of beauty to regenerate a sense of shared contemplation. If before there was patronage, now there is crowdfunding in which everyone can participate in the creation of a work of art. The purchase in this way is no longer a gesture of possession, but of collective restitution because the work can be donated to a museum to be visible to all. Beauty is sharing. You can “make a masterpiece. Culture is experiencing one of the darkest periods of recent years. What do you think of this moment
Each historical moment is alternated by phases of ascent and phases of darkness. Let us remember that from suffering one can always learn a lesson for one’s emancipation. This teaching is greater for those who are aware of the time they are living without giving in to complaining. In any historical era, human beings have always complained, taking refuge in the linguistic cliche of “so much was better before”.
If we really had courage and will, we could face life without “retreating” out of fear, because today we have tools and possibilities that were unthinkable until a few decades ago. There is no other historical moment in which it has been so easy to have access to knowledge. The Internet, however, also brings with it disadvantages because in this immense availability it becomes difficult to access content that is coherent (and true!) With one’s research. The current crisis weighs heavily on young people and women. There is a political responsibility and a youth responsibility. Which side are you on
It is clear to everyone that many people, in top positions, have difficulty in taking one step back and then making two steps forward thanks to their youthful vigor. One of the roles of the “teachers” lies precisely in educating the younger generations to responsibility. The greater the responsibility, the greater the growth. Failure to do this means that society is destined to be perpetually infantilized. A few weeks ago some guys kicked and punched your lookdown artwork. You brought them to your studio to make them understand the effort to make a work. What this story taught you
First of all, I invited these guys to listen to them and understand what had happened from them. It is a way to improve myself. In my life I have discovered that often in boys who experience discomfort there is much more to discover. Unfortunately, we are increasingly postponing the confrontation in favor of confrontation. The fatigue of reality seems to yield to the disillusionment of the digital. It is possible to make these two worlds coexist
Online communication has been with me since I started making art. We need to make people understand through digital that there is another form of fatigue. Precisely for this reason I am trying to open my studio to give a live experience to people who want to look and understand my work. We must rediscover the aesthetic appeal of manual skills which does not necessarily mean making works of art but being curious. This can help us have a broader view. It is an additional element in support of our daily experience. This juncture can be a moment of rapprochement with mastery
We have lived through a period of great technological development that has positioned us in a certain direction that has laid bare the world of pastist art. There is an entire ecosystem of art that has remained “old”. Many companies that previously dedicated an artistic investment now no longer do so. It therefore becomes complex to support oneself with one’s art. This crisis is global and therefore there are fewer and fewer investments in art, because it is their last thought. I have not personally followed these stereotypes that depend on a dying system. I am free and in this freedom I have faced this crisis by continuing to work on my projects. If you had to give three tips to empower young people for those who are entering the world of work what would you tell them
Focus! Set yourself goals and complain less. Totally dedicate yourself to your training, be greedy for knowledge and insist on yourself. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t finished school, real and life school. If we don’t make a commitment to change ourselves how can we expect the world to change
