The borborygmas are the noises that are produced by the digestive system before, during or after the gastric activity, or the first of digestion, or during the intestinal activity .
Noises occur with variable frequency and are physiological and natural for practically everyone. However, when they occur with excessive frequency, it will be appropriate to go deeper and analyze the reasons for the appearance of such noises.
Let’s see together what are the causes , what are the possible effective remedies and what is the difference between intestinal borborygmas and stomach borborygmas .
What are borborygmas Borborygmas
are noises that are produced by our body mainly in two phases:
- while the gastric juices are secreted which will be used during digestion;
- while the food passes through the intestine and the characteristic gases of the intestine are created.
As should be clear at this point in the discussion, borborygmas are normal and it is physiological to occur from time to time, especially during periods of relatively prolonged fasting. In these cases, in fact, the secretions of gastric juices increase, which produce, as we have seen before, the characteristic noise of borborygmas.
Intestinal borborygmas Intestinal
borborygmas can be traced back to peristaltic movements and to the progression of gases that are formed in the intestine and that proceed during digestion. Also in this case the “noises”, if we want to call them that, can increase in the case of fasting.
The absence of food to digest and to pass inside the intestine can in fact increase the volume of borborygmas, acting as the empty intestine as a box.
The borborygmas of the stomach
As we said at the beginning of the guide, the borborygmas can also come from the stomach, typically following the production of gastric juices which will then be functional for digestion.
In the event that they occur, however, with excessive frequency, the causes would be to be found in any pathological problems, which we will discuss in the next paragraph.
Causes of borborygmi pathologies: when further investigation is necessary
Although in the vast majority of cases the borborygmasare due to absolutely physiological phenomena, in a residual percentage of cases they can signal the presence of various problems affecting the stomach, intestines, or the digestive process in general.
Among the problems that can most frequently cause borborygmas we find:
- food intolerances : lactose, gluten and to a lesser extent other types of intolerances. In this case the problem occurs in conjunction with abdominal cramps, flatulence and even diarrhea;
- irritable bowel syndrome : complex problem that includes, among its symptoms, the appearance of frequent borborygmas;
- diet too rich in sugar or in any case where very abundant meals too often find citizenship;
- specific drugs , such as acarbose, which can hinder the absorption of certain nutrients.
There are remedies for borborygmas
Borborygmas are considered physiological if they are present only infrequently. In the event that they were accompanied by other symptoms, such as abdominal swelling, flatulence, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, it becomes instead necessary to investigate the matter and contact a specialist to investigate the possible presence of diseases affecting the stomach or intestine.
However, countermeasures can be taken to prevent borborygmas from occurring too frequently:
- avoid too large meals;
- avoid legumes and other foods that can form excess intestinal gas;
- limit the consumption of sugars;
- avoid foods to which we are intolerant.
By following these small tricks, unless other types of situations are present, they should be more than enough to overcome the problem and bring the borborygmi back to physiological frequency.
