The Tivoli Grand, which is what the replacement for the XLV is called in Europe -this denomination is still used in other countries-, takes the “short” Tivoli as its starting point, providing slight changes in its appearance, specifically in the bumpers.
This Tivoli Grand is now 4.48 m long , that is, 4 cm more than when it was called XLV – and 25.5 cm more than the Tivoli, compared to which it is also 4.7 cm taller: the The explanation for this disparity is none other than due to the incorporation of longitudinal bars in the roof in the longer of the two.
This difference in length is explained exclusively by the increase in the size of the rear overhang, since the front is similar in both Tivoli and the wheelbase, too: 2.60 m.

The trunk, the raison d’être of the Tivoli Grand

Thanks to that almost 26 cm longer overhang, the Tivoli Grand has a large capacity trunk: 720 liters if you take into account all the available height, up to the roof, 574 up to the curtain roller that is at the height of the highest area of the rear seatbacks, according to the measurements provided by Ssangyong. As usual, we have made our own measurements determining the maximum height of the curtain that hides the luggage from view and found 513 liters.Although it is somewhat less than 10 percent of the official capacity, it is still very large. A height of 76 cm, plus a width that in some places is 133 cm and a floor that, in its deepest area, reaches 86 cm, explain its capacity.

It has a partially folding floor – it is made up of two pieces – that can be used to divide the trunk into two levels. Also to do it in two zones if it is placed vertically using the side guides. If we use it by dividing it in two, we obtain a volume in the upper area of 368 liters -the floor would be about 7 cm below the loading plane- and another in the lower area of 148 liters .
These measurements are valid for the units that use the engine that exclusively works with gasoline, because if the option is chosen that it also works with LPG – this alternative supposes an increase in the price of 2,050 euros, although it provides cheaper kilometers for the price of the fuel and the Eco label instead of the C- the toroidal tank occupies a good part of that lower area : the trunk would therefore be limited to those 368 liters.
Among cars with body dimensions similar to the Ssangyong Tivoli Grand, only the larger or more expensive Hyundai Tucson, Citroen C5 Aircross, Skoda Karoq, Peugeot 3008 or Seat Ateca can offer such capable trunks.

A price with a promotional discount of 2,000 euros
And it is that another of the virtues of the Tivoli Grand is its price, which starts with discounted promotions, from 17,900 euros in the case of its Line version, already abundantly equipped with air conditioning, cruise control, sound system, alarm , height-adjustable driver’s seat and all available driving aids.

These include, in addition to the systems that were already incorporated in the Tivoli since 2017 -warning of the risk of frontal collision, lane departure, staying in the same or recognition of traffic signs, among others-, new aids such as the detector of fatigue, the one that warns that the car in front has advanced in a traffic jam or the safety distance alert.

The Tivoli Grand has three more trim levels, being the one that occupies the second level from which Ssangyong expects the highest number of sales. This Urban Plusadds to the equipment of the Line, the air conditioning, the rain and light sensors, the rear view camera, the infotainment system with an 8” screen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto -both with cable connection- and the leather-trimmed steering wheel . Also fog lights and alloy wheels with 205/65 R16 tires. The rest of the finishes are Premium, with mixed leather and fabric upholstery or digital instrumentation with a 10.25” screen; and the Limited, with keyless entry and start, alloy wheels with 215/50 R18 wheels, folding rear-view mirrors and the automatic selector for low or high beams, together with the bodywork with a roof in a different color from the rest.
The jump in price, equal to the manual gearbox -the engine is always the same- is 2,500 euros for the balance of Line to Urban Plus, 1,100 from this to Premium and 1,360 from Premium to Limited.

Only one engine for the Tivoli Grand, the 163 hp 1.5

The engine is always the same: the most powerful of the two petrol ones available in the “short” Tivoli. And it is that, in the Tivoli Grand, both the 128 CV G12T with that fuel and the 136 CV Diesel D16T are rejected. The one used, therefore, is from the G15T versions, always linked to front-wheel drive.
This four-cylinder engine -the 1.2 liter is three- is gasoline direct injection, has a turbo and carries 163 hp between 5,000 and 5,500 rpm. It runs smoothly and provides enough oomph on the roadand without the consumption seeming excessive: it homologates an average of 7.2 l/100 km with the manual gearbox, 7.8 with the automatic and, with the first, we obtained an average of 7.5 l/100 km with all kinds of use.

The biggest defect that we find is the lack of power at low speed, below 2,100 rpm -Ssangyong states that the maximum torque of 280 or 260 CV, depending on the box, however, it gives it from 1,500 laps- and that causes that in urban driving you have to be more careful than normal with the clutch. If it’s going to be used frequently in the city, it’s probably worth opting for the six-speed automatic gearbox instead of the manual: choosing this transmission with a torque converter means paying an additional 1,500 euros.

The suspension gives a good feeling of containment of the body-it is rather firm, so that the irregularities are noticeable- and the steering has improved a lot compared to how we remembered it in the first XLV. It has the possibility of regulating, by pressing a button in the lower part of the dashboard, the assistance with which we want it to work. One of the modes is called Normal and the other Sport, with a minor difference between the two.

Reasonable habitability, but without fanfare

Properly finished, the Tivoli Grand’s passenger compartment does not differ in size from the XLV or the “short” Tivoli, although in the aspect of elements such as the dashboard, which come from that smaller one. Thus, although it does not have a large enough space to comfortably transport five adults, it has excellent height levels.
Compared with other SUVs of the same length -remember, everything that the Grand grows does behind the rear axle- the roominess along does not stand out.We have been struck by the very soft padding of the rear seats, how little the transmission tunnel bulges, as well as the use, among the various places to stow available objects, of rubber bands on the undersides of the front seats instead of the usual “kangaroo” type bags.
