Who are the “fragile” workers today
The coaching activities I carry out on a daily basis to help people relocate to the world of work give me the opportunity to have a straightforward look at today’s situation.
In this particular situation, the over 45 age group is particularly in trouble because there is a “new” job market due to the speed of change and the required skills that make it very difficult to change profession or re-enter work.
The causes are attributable to several factors, including unfortunately the intersection of some coincidences that do not depend on the individual, as is happening today with the pandemic and the chain reactions that are reflected in every area. Many people have thus found themselves “in the middle” of something bigger than them, let’s think of those who had worked maybe ten years always in the same company for an indefinite period and decided to change jobs just last December and who were still in February on trial; the freeze on layoffs has led many companies to leave those on probation at home.
Other groups at risk are women with children because in many cases the pandemic has impacted precisely on those most in need, with treatment by companies that is not always exemplary.
Lastly, the young. The job market is even more competitive today and is cutting out many new graduates who are unable to enter the world of work. What is striking looking at the job market is that people are unprepared to face new career paths. It is as if there was an implicit effort in decoding the changes taking place, more and more sudden. What do you think I agree
, there is a lot of unpreparedness both in facing new career paths and in updating. People don’t know, for example, that there are Applicant Tracking System (ATS) software that filters incoming resumes. For those looking for a job, it is essential to know the technological process through which applications are filtered and then selected.
We live in a world that has changed dramatically over the past 15 years. We must go beyond the fear of replacing man with machine. For example, working in the marketing field necessarily means having skills in marketing automation as well. And for a doctor the fear is not of being replaced by a machine but that maybe he will have to know how to perform surgical operations also through robots. Who are the people who are losing the most in this situation and how it is possible to support their future
? There have been sectors more affected than others. We think of tourism, entertainment, the world of events, and that of sport. Basically everything that created aggregation.
The question to ask is how to manage to support the future of the people most in difficulty, placing the emphasis on two basic aspects: 1) increase individual and social awareness of what we are experiencing and possible future scenarios 2) decrease information asymmetries as far as it concerns the ways of looking for work. More than half of the open positions are not published anywhere, so the importance of networking takes priority. I have worked to accelerate this relational aspect by creating a Telegram group where I constantly publish job offers that are reported to me by many companies. And an ethical action that should be replicated to help the many people who today do not find a way to enter the world of work or to reposition themselves adequately. You are the author of the book “The Proven Secret of an Outstanding LinkedIn Profile: How to Speed Up Your Social Media with AI”. I must admit that I personally did not know the behind the scenes of HR. What advice can you give for those looking for a job
The lockdown started very early also here in Dubai, where I live and work. From the outset, I understood that we would achieve worrying unemployment rates around the world. So I decided to write this book to help people understand how to use a fundamental job search platform like LinkedIn.
In the current suffering we can react in two ways: use technology and Artificial Intelligence or suffer it, as the recent “The Social Dilemma” warned.
We need to be more aware of our actions, of what is done with our data.
While recruiters use software to select the ideal candidate, the candidate can also use software to get more noticed by the recruiter.
Finally, last but not least, let’s not forget the importance of studying. All time.
Knowledge in the VUCA era (Volatilty, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity) is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition. To boost our career, we also need to implement what we have learned from a book or course. In this way, the right mix is created that does not make us lose our way even when the sea is stormy. In Italy there is a very strong talent mismatch between job supply and demand. What skills will be most in demand in the next few years
Yes, not only in Italy in reality but all over the world. Reading the LinkedIn report on the most sought-after skills in Italy we find, for example, Project Management, Architecture Design, Sales Management, Psychological Assessment. This tells us that skills that cannot be automated will also have great value in the near future.
