Sevilla returned to the path of victory, after three consecutive draws -two in LaLiga and another in the Champions League-, beating Valencia 3-1 in a match on matchday six that was played at the Sanchez-Pizjuan and in which all the goals came in the first half to give way to a second half with little history.
It was the Argentine Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez who scored the first after two minutes; Toni Lato, in his own goal by deflecting a cross from also Argentine Gonzalo Montiel, made it 2-0 after a quarter of an hour in an absurd point; Rafa Mir made it 3-0 for Sevilla and half an hour later Hugo Duro, with a rebound included in the Brazilian Diego Carlos, shortened distances (3-1); without the marker moving more throughout the match.
Julen Lopetegui’s team was passing a kind of strength test against a rival that has changed its face at this start of the season with Jose Bordalas on the bench and, although they went into the clash with their five official games without losing – four from LaLiga and one of the Champions League-, it is also true that the last three were draws.
The Gipuzkoan coach moved his squad due to the tight program this September, in which he alternates the domestic and continental tournaments, and kicked off players such as the Argentine Gonzalo Montiel, the Dutch Karim Rekik or Rafa Mir for the usual Jesus Navas , the Argentinian Marcos Acuna or the Moroccan Youssef En-Nesyri.
The Valencia coach, for his part, also made changes, although these were more necessary after the morale blow that he lost Sunday’s clash against Real Madrid in the final stretch (1-2) and lost footballers like Jose Luis due to injury. Gaya, the Portuguese Thierry Correia or Carlos Soler.
There was little time to see how these two starting eleven played out because the match ended after two minutes, when Sevilla recovered a ball in the center of the field and the Argentine Erik Lamela put a perfect pass through the center and between the lines to his compatriot Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez, who defined with solvency before the departure of Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Seconds before the end of the first quarter of an hour, the locals made it 2-0 in the absurd play of the game, with a lateral cross to the area by Montiel that bounced off Toni Lato very far from the goal but the ball bounced high that confused the Valencian goalkeeper.
Two very consecutive sets that deconcentrated the Valencian team, which left many gaps in the defense that the locals took advantage of, as happened after twenty-two minutes, when another long Sevilla pass, this time from the Brazilian Fernando Reges to Rafa Mir, who He was grateful for starting the game to score his first official goal under Lopetegui’s orders by beating the Georgian goalkeeper, who stayed halfway out.
The virtue of Valencia was to manage to score after half an hour and leave the scoreboard somewhat more open and with many minutes still at stake, since at half an hour Hugo Duro finished off and on this occasion it was Sevilla’s Brazilian defender Diego Carlos who he deflected the ball and misled the Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bono.
This is how the break was reached, with a 3-1 after an intense period, rough at times, and it seemed that there was still a story to tell in the second half despite the fact that Sevilla, with great effectiveness, had the match well on track.
From the beginning of the second part, Bordalas took out the American Yunus Musah and the French Mouctar Diakhaby and it was the first of them who made a wall early with Dimitri Foulquier so that the Frenchman would try it against Bono in a warning of intentions.
Lopetegui, on the verge of a quarter of an hour before the restart, also made changes, three at a time, when En-Nesyri, Rakitic and Jesus Navas entered, with the idea of not losing the intensity and control of the game against a rival who did not had no choice but to press.
Valencia gained meters, had a little more ball in their possession, but never gave the impression that they could achieve a comeback or even the possibility of scoring another goal that would have put interest on the scoreboard.
