A very interesting route due to its beautiful ending. It starts from Villanueva del Rio y Minas and after about 6 km it reaches a farm where the Roman archaeological site of Munigua is located.
The road begins on the outskirts of the town, near the Rivera de Huesna , next to the municipal soccer field. Looking straight at the Puente del Tren, the route starts to the left, following the indication of a sign that marks the direction and distance to both the ruins and El Pedroso.
Soon, the route leaves the Blue Lake and the hermitage of Santa Barbara aside. You have to follow the Cordel de El Pedroso. The path advances through a terrain in very good condition between fields dotted with pines, olive trees and bushes. For almost all the time you go along the train track, you even have to cross it on one occasion. Caution with the cars that access the route to also reach the ruins.
At exactly 6.2 km , a fork with a sign is reached. Here you have to separate from the Cordel de El Pedroso and advance along the ramp on the right. This point is easily recognized if cars have been passing by during the journey, since almost all of them will be parked there.
The slight ascent leads directly to the entrance gate to a farm. Although it is closed, you can open the bolt and pass without problems. The landscape gives way to a beautiful meadow with cattle grazing freely on the sides of the road. Some metal plates with arrows indicate which route to follow. After two kilometers or so, the ruins of the terraced sanctuary on a hill will finally be seen. Then it’s time to go down to a small valley that already gives access to the ancient Roman settlement of Munigua.
Munigua had its splendor from the 1st to the 3rd century AD, until an earthquake started its decline. The ruins, which are a Site of Cultural Interest, consist of some baths, a wall, a Forum, a temple of Mercury or a necropolis, among other constructions. The advice is to arrive at the place with time to be able to enjoy it carefully.
After concluding the visit, it is time to return to Villanueva del Rio and Minas by the same path.
Although the route is simple, the profile is wavy. Avoid doing it in hot weather, as there are many stretches without shade. There are also no intermediate services.
