We thank the Public Relations Office (URP) of the Farnesina for the great availability shown in responding to particular cases advanced by the community

When renewal or new release is needed

  • Passport expired for 10 years : Italian passports issued from 2013 onwards have a validity of 10 years, after which the document is no longer renewed but it is necessary to request a new release
  • Passport lost / stolen / with finished pages : in these cases you have to start the procedure for a new issue.
  • Passport expiring within 6 months : it is valid for recognition but may not be accepted for expatriation (check the conditions of entry to the country on the website www.viaggiaresicuri.it); in any case it is better to ask for a new release.
  • Passport expired for 5 years : passports issued before 2013 had a validity of 5 years, therefore those who still have a five-year document can request renewal and extend the validity for another 5 years.

NB : All modern ordinary passports are called electronic, because they have a microprocessor on the cover containing the holder’s data.

Cost of renewal
Description Cost of electronic stamp (revenue stamp) € 73.50
postal order € 42.50

TOTAL € 116.00

NB : You do not pay anything else until the deadline (from 2014 it is no longer necessary to replace the revenue stamp annually at a cost of € 40.00).

How and where to obtain the new passport
It is possible to start the procedure at the police headquarters, post offices or municipal offices. In any case, you will be forced to report to the police station or the police station to take fingerprints, therefore it is preferable to opt for the police station right away. Here is the procedure to follow:

  1. Make an appointment at the police station : through the site passaportonline.poliziadistato.it, program the date for delivery of documents and fingerprints. Attention: generally only one request is accepted for each appointment!
  2. Go to the police station : it is necessary to physically go to the police station on the day of the appointment to present the required documentation and release the fingerprints.
  3. Wait for the release times : it can take from 1/2 days up to a month (usually 10 is enough).
  4. Collect the document : the new passport must be collected at the police station or alternatively it can be received by post (at a cost of € 8.20).

NB : In the event that there are no dates available on the online agenda, it is advisable to physically go to the police station, especially if there are the conditions for applying the urgent procedure.
If you have more than one request to submit (eg the whole family needs a passport), you will usually have to book multiple appointments via the online agenda. However, it is possible that a particularly courteous operator decides to accept multiple requests with a single appointment.

How long does it take to get a passport

Issue times can vary a lot . The main problem is being able to book an appointment at the police headquarters via the online service. In larger municipalities it can takeup to 4/6 months to be able to set a date in the online agenda, as it is always full. After you go to the appointment to release the fingerprints and submit the application, it can take from 1/2 days up to a month for the actual delivery of the document.
If for various reasons you cannot collect the new passport yourself, it is possible to appoint a delegate to collect it provided that he is of age and that his details are expressly indicated in the “notes” section.

Urgent procedure for issuing a passport
In some cases of “proven emergency” it is possible to request the urgent procedure for issuing the passport, thanks to which you can shorten waiting times.

Cases of proven urgency are considered:

  • Sudden travel documented for work purposes;
  • Documented medical reason;
  • Documented reason for tourist travel (for this purpose, the regular issue of a travel document – ticket is considered valid);
  • Additional documented reasons that will be evaluated by the Office.

Cases of proven urgency are not considered:

  • Just having a plane ticket;
  • Letters from relatives, acquaintances, etc;
  • Demonstration of urgent work commitments proven by messages received via email;
  • Self-certification of the applicant on urgent / emergency situations not proven by adequate supporting documentation;
  • School trips.

In any case, the “urgency” feature will always be evaluated by the office manager, who will decide whether to accept the procedure and, in this case, will define the timing. In some cases, to receive users without a reservation who want to request the urgent procedure, an emergency fee of about € 50.00 may be applied.

Passport for Minors
Since 2012, minors who want to travel abroad must have the new electronic passport for children . The registration in the parental passport is no longer considered valid. The passport for minors has a lower validity:

  • From 0 to 3 years : the document will have a validity of 3 years
  • From 3 to 18 years : the document will have a validity of 5 years

For the issue of a passport for minors, the presence of both parents is required . If one of the two parents cannot be physically present, the applicant is obliged to present a photocopy of an identification document of the absent parent and a signed declaration of consent to travel abroad. Download the form or find out more information on the passport for minors
