For fans of two and four wheels, for speed lovers and for all those who grew up with the myth of Dannis Hopper in “Easy Rider”, an On the Road journey and a dream to follow for a lifetime. Maybe we Italians cannot indulge in a coast-to-coast adventure through the legendary “route 66”, but nothing prevents us from organizing a nice road trip along our dear peninsula … or maybe not!
In fact, it is impossible not to consider at least a couple of variables: with the current times the price of gasoline has skyrocketed, and as if that were not enough we have to deal with motorway tolls , sworn enemies of every self-respecting motorist.
But all is not lost! With the right amount of organization, you can optimize resources and enjoy the journey of your dreams.
First of all it is necessary to estimate the costs of the motorway route that you intend to take, but it is a pity that it is not as simple as you think …
How to calculate the motorway toll in Italy
The toll is a tax that must be paid in order to travel along a motorway section . Calculating the amount of a tollvaries by country. In Italy, the criteria that determine this calculation are defined in the specific sector regulations. To quantify the cost of a toll it is necessary to multiply a coefficient called the Unit Tariff by the number of kilometers separating the motorway toll booths, also considering any free sections, adduction bridges and junctions included in the stretch of road to be traveled. The Unit Rate depends on the following elements:
- Vehicle class : made up of 5 classes, it takes into account the physical measurements of the vehicle, namely, the shape made up of the height of the passenger compartment (class A or B) and the number of axles of the vehicle, if greater than two (class 3 , 4, 5).
- Characteristics of the road section (plain or mountain) : the cost of managing and maintaining the roads is also considered in the overall calculation, therefore, roads full of viaducts, tunnels or mountain sections will be the most expensive
- Companies that manage the section : a motorway or a portion of it can be managed by different concessionary companies. In these cases it is necessary to calculate the kilometers and the rates for each of the companies involved
VAT must be added to the figure obtained through multiplication and then mathematically rounded up to 10 cents lower or higher (governed by the Interministerial Decree n.10440/28/133 of 12 November 2001 of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Economy and Finance). Ok it seems to have returned to school, when the math teacher explained the lesson of the day and hardly anyone could understand a tube. Fortunately, various tools and sites run to our rescue that allow us to more easily calculate the indicative amount to invest for a given journey. These include the official website of the Autostrade per l’Italia company, which manages over 50% of national routes with the closed toll system (as explained so far).

- App for calculating the motorway toll : it is possible to calculate the motorway toll with free apps available both on the app store (download here) and on the Google play store (download here), which take into account all the parameters mentioned above.
The cost for the open toll system does not change as the kilometers traveled increase, but the amount to be paid is fixed (defined by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport), as occurs at the Settecamini and Ponte di Nona toll booths.

How to pay the motorway toll
When returning the ticket, collected at the toll booth entrance (for closed toll systems), it will be possible to make the payment, just follow the appropriate signs below. The payment methods are as follows:
- in cash : through the automatic cash machine or directly to the toll booth. To pay in cash you have to use the “white slopes”.
- by credit card or debit card : by Viacard, Bancomat or credit card. To pay by credit card or debit card it is necessary to use the “blue tracks” or the “white tracks” without operator
- with Telepas : which allows you to pay without stopping at the toll booth (both at the entrance and at the exit). To use the Telepass you have to take the “yellow track” or the “blue track” with the “T” indicated.
