The Walk of Fame in Rome is enriched with new names of athletes who have made Italian sport great.
The champions chosen to add other pieces in the most famous paved street of the capital are five: Luigi Beccali (athletics), Ercole Baldini (cycling), Paolo Maldini (football), Samuele Papi (volleyball) and Massimiliano Rosolino (swimming).
A tile was dedicated to each of them because during their career they have distinguished themselves internationally.
The street that takes the name of Walk of Fame takes up the idea of Hollywood, where the most famous stars have their own plaques along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street to celebrate their fame.
In Italy it is not the world of television and cinema that gives visibility to the Walk of fame, but the sports one, with 117 champions who have made history each in their own discipline and have their own plaque along the road leading to the Olympic Stadium. The first celebrities to be included starting from 2015 were 100, including the unforgettable Fausto Coppi , cycling hero, or the champion of alpine skiing Debora Compagnoni, the first to have won gold in three Olympic editions. But these are just some of the most famous sports names who have given important awards to our country.
After the 7 names entered last year, five more stars from the world of athletics, cycling, football, volleyball and swimming have now been added.
The first and Luigi Beccali , gold medal in the 1500m at the Los Angeles Olympics, who is remembered with these words:
It was one of the greatest in history, we tried to track down the family but we didn’t succeed because they now live in the USA, it represented Italy before the war at its best, a pride to be here
From the past we recall the greatness of Hercules Baldini , a great cyclist who is the only one so far to have won an Olympic gold medal, a world championship and a Grand Giro. Back in 1956 he made Italy dream with the gold medal at the Olympics in Australia. From the voice of Renato Rocco, President of Federciclismo, the tribute to the champion:
A myth, I still remember the gold at the Olympics in Australia in 1956 where they didn’t have the Italian anthem because they didn’t expect it and the audience was singing it live, great athlete and great man
Then it is the turn of Samuele Papi , top player of the national volleyball team, who played a decisive role at the 1998 Volleyball World Cup, where Italy won the title in Tokyo, with coach Bebeto, who left us from little. Here is what we tell about Papi:
He was a great player, decisive in the world championship won in Japan. A top-level player who has shown his attachment to the national team and the measure of man and athlete, a true phenomenon. But
among these new stars there are also two athletes who had the honor of being able to still be present at the celebration of their career. These are Paolo Maldini and Massimiliano Rosolino.
The first, visibly moved, comments this plaque in honor of him:
Sport has given me so much and for me it is a real honor to receive this tribute

Giovanni Malago, in fact, exalts it with words of great admiration:
His numbers make you shiver: 7 championships, 5 Champions, record of 8 finals played, an honor and a pride of all Italian sport
Finally, it is the turn of the swimming champion, who attends the ceremony with all his family and wishes to thank us for this official recognition:
It is an honor that repays all the sacrifices made to get here. Honestly I was hoping for it; probably the reason that this day has come only today and that I have never officially declared to end the activity and in fact I have not yet stopped. Now I dedicate myself to triathlon and in any case it is a way to keep fit and take care of psychophysical well-being. To all the boys I say that, beyond the means available, a great psychological and physical strength is always needed to reach the highest levels and this recognition is the testimony of it
And and with these words of encouragement for the new generations that sport Italian hopes to enrich the local Walk of Fame in the coming years as well.
