A few days ago we showed you from Mascotissimas the most popular breeds in Spain. Among them, we found some like the German Shepherd, the Yorkshire or the Labrador Retriever, but none of them is native to Spain.
For this reason, we wanted to look for the Spanish dog breeds , which, as stated by the International Cynological Federation in charge of establishing dog breeding standards, according to the Royal Canine Society of Spain, there are 12 breeds.
Spanish dog breeds
-Spanish Greyhound: This is one of the best known breeds and unfortunately it is also one of the most mistreated . They are dogs that have been used for hunting for many years due to their great ability to run, sinceThey can reach 70 km in a stretch of about 300 meters. They are very confident and competitive but at the same time serious and withdrawn. It is considered one of the most abandoned dogs, since when they show that they are not good for hunting, on many occasions they get rid of them.
-Spanish water dog: In Europe there are different types of water dog but the Spanish is characterized by its wavy or curly hair . It is a faithful, obedient, laborious animal. It has its origin in Andalusia , where it was traditionally used as a shepherd, helper on ships and in hunting. The breed was recognized by the Royal Canine Society of Spain in 1985 and by the International Cynological Federation in 1999.
-Catalan Shepherd Dog:As its name suggests, this breed is originally from Catalonia and is characterized by herd care . It is a very intelligent, agile, easy to train and protective medium sized dog.
-Presa canario : This powerful breed of Spanish Presa dog is large, not so much in height but in width, making it a very strong, powerful and resistant dog. It comes from the Canary Islands and according to its government it is the natural symbol of the island of Gran Canaria. Despite his impressive physique, he is a noble and tame dog with the family.
-Spanish Mastiff: Mastiffs are one of the largest breeds that exist, weighing up to 100 kilos. Despite its incredible size, the truth is that the Spanish Mastiff is a very noble dog, meek, affectionate and calm.It is ideal to live with the family and in Spain this animal usually lives in large spaces such as fields to protect the home. One of its variants is the Pyrenean Mastiff, which also enters the list of recognized dogs of the Spanish breed.
-Mallorquin Shepherd Dog: It is a dog of great nobility, very loyal to its owner, intelligent, docile, shy and large in size. They are muscular animals, totally black or black with a white spot on the chest.
-Spanish Hound:The Spanish Hound is a trail dog breed originating from the extreme north of the Iberian Peninsula. Its physical characteristics are: large head, fine hair, long ears, wide neck and a sweet and sad look. As a general rule, these dogs are affectionate and good-natured.
-Mallorquin Dogo: Traditionally it has been used for guard and defense . It is an animal with a slightly elongated and very strong body, of medium height, with a massive head that is larger in the male than in the female and that, in general, has a calm and faithful character.
-Ibicenco Hound:This dog is originally from the Balearic Islands, specifically from Mallorca, Formentera and Ibiza, although it also abounds in the area of ​​Catalonia and Valencia. It is an animal similar to the Andalusian hound (which is not recognized by the FIC) and is thin, with long, hard hair.
-Burgos Pointer: The Burgos Pointer is a breed of dog native to Spain. Originally from Castile, especially from the province of Burgos, this rustic breed is used for hunting and has exceptional characteristics for hunting small game . It is a sample dog breed. Drop ears and short hair are its main physical characteristics. As for the character, they are calm, noble and docile dogs.
-Podenco canario:Similar to the Ibizan or Andalusian Podenco, it has a prodigious sense of smell and hearing. They are very active, brave and dynamic dogs that rarely become aggressive.
