A few days ago, from Mascotissimas we showed you a list of the dog breeds that had the most health problems, because each breed is different and some have special needs. As we have already said, having an English bulldog is not the same as having a border collie.
What is the reason that some dogs are healthier than others
basically because dogs have been genetically crossed for centuries to enhance their physical characteristics or behaviors. For this reason, many breeds began to develop a series of hereditary diseases.
With this we do not mean that if your dog appears on the list that we are going to show you next, it will not suffer from any disease since the good health and longevity of your pet will depend on education, nutrition, preventive medicine and lifestyle that you offer.
Breeds of dogs with fewer health problems
The list that we are going to show you is made by experts from the animal world, such as the famous trainer Cesar Millan or Animal Expert.
-Border Collie: This breed leads several lists of Mascotissimas, such as “the most active breeds there are”. They are very intelligent dogs that show a great capacity for learning and skill, in addition to standing out for their great predisposition for physical exercise. It is very common to see them in canine agility championships, known as “agility” championships. Exercise helps their life expectancy to be between 14 and 17 years , but they still need adequate preventive medicine to enjoy a full life, since they are susceptible to developing diseases such as epilepsy or collie eye anomaly ( thinning of the vascular tissue at the back of the eye, which does not significantly affect vision).
– Siberian Husky: It is one of the races that appear in all the consulted lists. It does not stand out for its life expectancy , since it is between 10 and 13 years , but for its excellent health and physical resistance . We must remember that it is a medium / large sized dog that weighs between 20 and 27 kilos and is robust, but still has few degenerative diseases compared to other dogs of the same size. Some of the diseases could be cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy and corneal dystrophy.
-Basenji : This breed is very peculiar for different reasons. It is in the ranking of the dogs that bark the least, in fact they have the unique characteristic of not barking, and instead emit a curious sound in the style of Tyrolean singing. This means that it is a very special breed within the animal world. They are also considered the oldest dogs in the world, thus associating themselves with their resistance and physical strength. Their life expectancy is between 12 and 14 years and if they eat well and exercise, they rarely get sick.However, among the frequent diseases of this breed, we find kidney problems (especially the so-called Falconi Syndrome), and progressive retinal atrophy.
– Shiba inusAppearance: This Japanese dog exhibits a compact, robust and resistant body, capable of withstanding great challenges in nature. The dog associations did not reach an agreement on the longevity of the shiba inu. While some experts point to a life expectancy of 15 years , others claim that these dogs can live up to 18 years . In fact, one of the longest-living dogs in the world was a Shiba Inu cross that lived almost 27 years. Some of his diseases are hypothyroidism and hip dysplasia.
– Belgian Shepherd Malinois:Your cognitive abilities are valued more than your physical appearance. For this reason, it presents a really very low predisposition to all kinds of hereditary or degenerative diseases. To remain strong and healthy they must do a lot of physical activity, and some of the pathologies are hip dysplasia, retinal atrophy and corneal dystrophy.
-Galgo : This Spanish breed enjoys very good health. It has always been associated with hunting jobs and they are very resistant dogs that have a life expectancy of between 12 and 15 years.When they get older they usually have dental problems , so it is advisable to be aware of them with a good diet and oral hygiene.
