Lanzarote is certainly one of the most beautiful islands of the Canary Islands, not surprisingly named a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Connected to the rest of Europe by low cost flights, and characterized by a warm and windy climate almost all year round, it is therefore a favorite destination for young people and especially for surfers. In addition to the beaches, what makes this land special are the volcanic landscapes and the wonderful works of Cesar Manrique , an important Spanish artist from the island who has created some interesting spaces in which art and nature coexist in perfect harmony.
Where it is and how to get there
The island of Lanzarote is part of the archipelago of the Canary Islands and is located in the Atlantic Ocean,.
To get to Lanzarote you can land directly at Lanzarote Airport (ACE). Both from Rome and from Milan there are direct flights that take from 4-5 hours (starting from € 51.00), but also travel solutions with a stopover: in this case the travel time increases to 6-9 hours. The airlines that make this route are: Iberia, Alitalia, AirFrance, AirEuropa, Airberlin and Meridiana. Alternatively, it is possible to land at the airport of the nearby island of Fuerteventura (FUE) and from there then take the ferry (the journey takes 25 minutes, cost € 28.00 round trip).
Although the various parts of the island are served by a good bus service, hiring a car is strongly recommended to move around the islandwhich guarantees maximum freedom. For prices and more info, we advise you to consult www.autoeurope.it, we usually rely on them because they have an excellent comparison system of the best companies and because you can cancel your reservation for free up to 48 hours before picking up the car.
What to see in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is not the classic island where you can relax on the beach and nightlife, rather it is a land to discover and in which to get in touch with nature. Here are 20 things to see absolutely in Lanzarote .
1 – Mirador del Rio
Photo by Edmundo Saez. Located 400 meters high , on the Risco de Famara, the Mirador del Rio and a lookout made by Cesar Manrique. It is located near the remains of an ancient military base from the late 19th century and is well camouflaged with the rock in a way that only a genius like Manrique could have conceived.
If there are no particular evidences on the outside, the interior of the architecture hides impressive windows designed to increase the effect of the panoramic view, but also monumental sculptures that hang from the ceiling defying gravity.
From here you can see the eighth Canary Island, La Graciosa, and the group of islets that are part of the Chinijo Islands National Park. At the bottom of the cliff stand out the reddish shades of the Salinas del Rio, also known as Guza, the oldest in the Canaries. The mirador can be visited on a combined organized tour which also includes the Cactus Garden, the Monument to the Farmer, the Jameos Del Agua or the Cueva de los Verdes.
Admire the view for free : the Mirador alone justifies a trip to Lanzarote, so you can’t miss the visit. However, if you really do not want to pay the ticket, you will find a path on the right that if followed offers views similar to those seen from the structure.
- How to get there: there is no public transport that goes to the Mirador, so it’s better to get around with a rental car. 30 min from Costa Teguise, 35 min from Arrecife, 42 min from Puerto del Carmen, 1 hour from Playa Blanca – Get directions
- Hours: 10: 00-17: 00
- Ticket cost: € 5.00
2 – Cueva de los Verdes
Photo of Lviatour. Cave formed by two superimposed galleries, in which corridors, labyrinths, underground lagoons and apparently bottomless abysses follow one another, all skilfully illuminated to bring out the shapes and colors of the solidified lava.
Las Cuevas de los Verdes are a cultural and natural heritage of Lanzarote , a place full of legends and characterized by scenarios of extraordinary beauty.
Formed following the eruption of the Volcan de la Corona , they were used as a hiding place by the locals to shelter from attacks by pirates from North Africa in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Commissioned by the Cabildo of Lanzarote, in the sixties, the artist Jesus Soto, in close collaboration with Manrique, I transform this particular place into a tourist attraction, working on lighting , exploiting the play of light and shadow to highlight the shapes left by the lava in its path.
One of the largest galleries houses an auditorium where musical events are held, which can hold up to a thousand people.
Advice for those who suffer from enclosed spaces : in general the cave is rather large and never overwhelming, however there are some short passages in which you have to lower yourself.
- How to get there: by car it is 23 min from Costa Teguise, 27 min from Arrecife, 36 min from Puerto del Carmen, 53 min from Playa Blanca. Bus 7 leaves from Arrecife and stops 2.5 km from the site (€ 4.00 – 40 min) – Get directions

3 – Jameos del Agua
Photo of Lmbuga. Natural space and artistic, cultural and tourist center conceived by Cesar Manrique . It is located in Haria, in the north of Lanzarote, and is one of the most popular destinations for visitors.
The word “jameo” refers to a hole produced by the collapse of the roof of a lava tunnel. The Jameos del Agua, like the neighboring Cueva de Los Verdes, is located right inside the volcanic tunnel caused by the eruption of the volcano de la Corona.
The Jameos del Agua are located in the section of this tunnel closest to the coast and consist of at least three “jameos”: the “Jameo Chico”, the “Jameo Grande” and the “Jameo de la Cazuela”.
From these tunnels, the local artist and architect Cesar Manrique, has pulled out a real gem, in order to show visitors a space for the contemplation of nature .
It is the first Center of art, culture and tourism created by Manrique and reflects one of his creative pillars: the harmony between nature and artistic creation . Ideal and take part in a tour that takes you in the footsteps of Cesar Manrique and that shows you how, from natural accidents, this artist has been able to create a trend that has conquered the world.
CACT of Lanzarote: Jameos del Agua, together with the Mirador del Rio and the Timanfaya Park, are centers of art, culture and tourism (CACT) born from the vision of Cesar Manrique. We recommend that you visit the cactlanzarote.com website for more information on the island’s 9 CACTs.
- How to get there: By car it is 23 min from Costa Teguise, 29 min from Arrecife, 36 min from Puerto del Carmen, 55 min from Playa Blanca. Bus n.9 leaves from Arrecife (€ 4.00 – 50 min – 3 trips a day from Estacion de Guaguas) – Get directions

4 – House of Cesar Manrique
The house where Cesar Manrique, an important local artist, lived until 1992, the year of his death.
In 2013, the mansion was opened to the public as a house-museum . It is located in the middle of a lush palm garden in the picturesque town of Haria, in the northern part of Lanzarote, where the island’s traditional forms of life are still preserved today. Here the artist finds the tranquility and contact with nature that he loved so much.
In 1986 Manrique started the construction of this house by adapting a ruined farmhouse. I use the language of traditional architecture reconsidered in a modern way, giving importance to comfort and aesthetics .
In addition to the private rooms, the tour includes a visit to the atelier where the artist worked and where everything (pigments, tables, easels, unfinished paintings) remained exactly as Manrique left it before he died.
The dwelling is set in a context of exuberant vegetation that amplifies the sense of welcome and serenity . Interesting is the guided tour on Cesar Manrique that will make you discover all the peculiar places of Lanzarote linked to the artist, including the house-museum.
- How to get there: By car it is 26 min from Costa Teguise, 32 min from Arrecife, 39 min from Puerto del Carmen, 54 min from Playa Blanca. Buses 7 and 26 leave from Arrecife and stop at Plaza de Haria, 1km from the entrance (€ 4.00, 50 min) – Get directions

5 – Caleta de Famara and Playa de Famara
Photo by giggel. Caleta de Famara is an ancient fishing village that seems to have stood still in time. Here there are two very famous beaches such as San Juan but above all Playa de Famara . It is an expanse of volcanic sand alternating with lighter sand over 6 km long. It is located on the slopes of a cliff more than 600 meters high, better known as the Risco de Famara, and is a very famous spot for surfing enthusiasts.
On a tourist level, the town is structured with a series of bungalows , arranged in a semicircle and built about 18 years ago. The small port stands out, mainly used by locals to launch their own private boats, as opposed to the small commercial fishing vessels that were once the lifeblood of Famara.
Caleta de Famara is a 24 min drive from Costa Teguise, 24 min from Arrecife, 28 min from Puerto del Carmen, 40 min from Playa Blanca. From Arrecife (Estacion de Guaguas) bus n.20 leaves (€ 2.00 – 45 min) – Get directions

Garden This garden is located in the village of Guatiza , in an agricultural area characterized by the extensive cactus plantations intended for to the cultivation of cochineal, in an ancient quarry where volcanic sand was extracted to spread over cultivated areas to retain moisture.
Covering an area of over 5,000 square meters, cacti from different parts of the world are housed, forming an unparalleled variety of species and colors. About 4,500 specimens of 450 different species , belonging to 13 different cactus families of the five continents.
The Cactus Garden was created by the artist Cesar Manrique who, in this scenario, was able to see the possibility of converting a residual space into a curious area divided into terraces.
The complex, which possesses the unmistakable Manrique brand, the unbreakable combination of art and nature that you breathe, is presided over by a windmill formerly used in the mill of corn and now functioning for educational purposes.
The green shade of the plants that stands out against the blue of the sky and the dark volcano creates a harmonious explosion of color that strikes visitors.

Teguise is the largest and most important market on the island . Every Sunday, from 10.00 to 14.00, the quiet “pueblo” is transformed into a colorful multitude of stalls where the undisputed protagonist is craftsmanship.
We advise you to be accompanied to the market by a local, ready to clarify any curiosity on the spot. This market, in fact, is a real institution: it attracts people from all over the island and there are even special bus rides used to reach the market.
Here you can buy unique handmade pieces, ceramic works, but also natural and gastronomic products. Do not miss the tasting of the exquisite cheeses and local wines . Finally, this is the place to meet artists, both Canarian and foreign, who have decided to live in Lanzarote and practice their art here.

To top it all off, the Monumento a la Fecundidad , an avant-garde work of art used by Cesar Manrique to pay his own tribute.
A journey into local folklore to understand the beauty of an island and the ways in which men and women have managed to create their own lifestyle to face adversity.

The International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC) is located in the old military fort of Castillo de San Jose , in the port of Arrecife. The museum was established to promote, collect and exhibit the most significant works of modern artistic creation .
Of particular interest is the collection of the artist Pancho Lasso , permanently exhibited.
The castle that houses the museum was built between 1776 and 1779 on top of a cliff to defend Arrecife and its port from the threat of modern states in conflict with the Spanish Empire. When its defensive purpose failed, it was then abandoned for almost a century.
Caesar Manriquehe then convinced the authorities of the island to transform the ancient fortress into an art gallery and thus the MIAC was inaugurated in 1976. Originally a small fishing village, it grew in importance until it became the capital of the island in 1852. Today it is a paradise for shoppers : countless shopping opportunities, especially along the pedestrianized Calle Leon y Castillo and at the large shopping center.
Among the attractions that are worth a visit we mention
Casa Amarilla , known as the Yellow House. It was the seat of the Cabildo (island government) of the island . Declared an asset of cultural interest in 2002, it houses on the ground floortemporary exhibitions on the ethnographic memory of Lanzarote .
It is one of the best known buildings in the city and is an example of eclectic architecture for administrative use . It was built in the late 1920s, in the heart of the historic center of Arrecife, the island’s capital. During a holiday in Lanzarote, wine connoisseurs must visit the Geria , a particular wine-producing area characterized by a surreal landscape. The area takes its name from the “geria”, that is a traditional conical hole carved into the volcanic gravel and bordered by rock, inside which the vines are grown. The best way to visit this area is via a guided tour of the vineyards and cellars.

The landscape it offers is simply breathtaking. The vegetation in this area is very scarce, and is present only in the areas with the oldest lava solidification, where there are about a thousand different species of lichens.
From the faunal point of view, different species of reptiles and birds stand out, which have been able to adapt perfectly to the harsh and strange conditions of this natural park. The park has in fact been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds .

Inside the park there is an area of about 14 km specially prepared to be visited by tourists . The route develops along the main core of the eruptions, where there is a concentration of elements of geological and geomorphological interest: furnaces, caves and castings.
Due to the extreme fragility of the environment, the area cannot be explored independently but it is possible to move around it in about 30-35 minutes, aboard specially equipped buses , we recommend that you take part in a guided excursion that includes the transfer from the hotel, so as not to have to think about anything and to be able to fully enjoy the landscape that surrounds you.

14 – El Golfo green beach
One of the most unique attractions of Lanzarote . This is the Green Lake, a lagoon that was generated by an ancient volcanic crater sunk under its weight, in whose cavity sea water flowed.
Marine plant organisms and algae have been able to thrive in the small space of the lake thanks to the presence of mineral salts of volcanic origin. This vegetal presence has given the pond its characteristic intense green color . The contrast between the surrounding dark volcanic rock and the deep green of the lake is almost an iris, a green eye that fascinates and captivates.
Due to the delicacy of the place and the unstable balance between the two creative and destructive forces of volcanic and marine origin, the place is a protected reserve , it is not allowed to swim or touch the water.
Although not being able to access it, the area can still be admired. From the parking lot there is a dirt path that leads to the viewpoint , and from here you can admire the lake and take the best photos (Get directions).

On the west coast of the island, Los Hervideros is one of the most impressive landscapes in Lanzarote , unique for its ability to fascinate and amaze .
