The important thing is to try to organize yourself as best as possible, looking for accommodation in advance and booking the tickets for the flight or the ferry crossing. Once on the island, getting around will be very simple : you can use the bus line, rent a moped or a car or move around thanks to electric bicycles.
But now let’s see everything together in detail! Here is a small guide on Lampedusa for you : how to get there, what to see and the most beautiful beaches!
Where is
Lampedusa and an island that is part of the Pelagie archipelago, together with the island of Linosa and the rock of Lampione, and is part of the Sicilian territory. It is located in the open sea, far from the coast of Sicily, and is the last Italian territory before arriving in Africa !
How to get to Lampedusa and how to get around
- By plane : there are direct flights, especially in summer, from Sicily and from major Italian cities. From Palermo there are 3 direct flights a day, from Catania there are 3 a week – compare flights
- By sea : the ferries of the Siremar company and the hydrofoils of the Ustica Lines company leave from Porto Empedocle in the province of Agrigento. The former take 9 hours (departure 11.00pm, arrival around 8.45am, average cost € 40.00 each way); hydrofoils take about 4 hours, average cost € 60.00 each way
- Getting around : the best way is to rent a moped (average cost € 20.00 per day) or a car (from € 40.00 per day). Keep in mind that petrol costs a little more (on average € 2.00 per liter); a good alternative could be an electric bicycle (3-day package at € 45.00); as public transport, you will find the orange bus that connects the city with the most important beaches, departures every hour and the ticket costs € 1.00 each way to be purchased directly from the driver.

- Cala Greca , on the east coast, to reach it you need to leave your car at the sanctuary of Porto Salvo, go up the opposite slope, pass a campsite and then walk along an acacia wood. The water right in front of the beach is often populated with algae, but further on the seabed becomes transparent.
- Cala Francese , on the east coast, next to Cala Maluk. It is a mixed beach, with sand and rock walls all around. Very suitable for families with children, easy to reach, with the possibility of parking nearby.

- Cala Galera , south coast, and inside an inlet between Punta Pruvulina and Punta e ‘Manzu, right in the Lampedusa nature reserve. It is not equipped, there are rocks overlooking the water and a wide strip of sand. Ideal for diving enthusiasts and with Mediterranean scrub all around characterized by mulberry trees, figs and carob trees.
- Cala Uccello , east coast, is one of the quietest, with a sandy cove between the high cliffs. You can park nearby or reach by boat. Equipped with umbrellas and a small bar.

Here there is no sand but a small stretch of rock with a concrete pier that overlooks the sea, characterized by a high turquoise seabed.
