In the square in front of the mammoth and modern Allianz Arena , in Munich, there is a plaque with the face of a man in bas-relief and on the bronze epigraph we read: “Kurt Landauer – Der Prasident des Bayern Munchen ” . In truth, the inscription in German is accompanied by a sentence also translated into Hebrew and the square itself (like the street that comes out in front of the stadium), in December 2015 was named after the former Bavarian president who held the office, the n three different periods, from 1913 to 1951, obtaining the longest term, 19 years, not yet equaled . Under his leadership the club won its first national title in 1932and laid the foundations for his future and current sporting successes.
Born on July 28, 1884 in Planegg, a village not far from Munich, to a Jewish family that ran a women’s clothing store, Kurt approached the Bavarian club in 1901, initially as a footballer, holding the role of second goalkeeper . Already in 1913 he assumed the title of president, a position, however, interrupted after only a year, because with the outbreak of the First World War, he was called to the front to defend his homeland. Having obtained the Iron Cross for valor and having finished the war experience, I return to play the role of “number 1” of the Bavarian team until 1933: In his second term, Kurt focuses primarily on building a winning company from a strong, controlled organization.

He reformed the youth sector , a unique idea at the time and, with careful planning, turned Bayern into an economically powerful team. He was considered unsportsmanlike and against German ethics when he proposed to pay players for their time on the pitch – an incentive, he thought, to bring talented players to the club as well.
He also appreciated the foreign teams from which he could learn and learn: Bayern regularly play friendlies against Swiss opponents, but also against the strongest of the time who came from Hungary and Austria. An attitude, once again, opposed by the German Football Federation which wanted a pure national football free from contamination. [/ Vc_column_text] [/ vc_column] [/ vc_row]

After lean years, finally, in 1932, Bayern won their first national title : April 24, with goals from Oskar Rohr and Franz Krumm and led by coach Richard Kohn, the group defeated Eintracht Frankfurt in Nuremberg, winning the first championship which was celebrated on the streets of Munich in a carriage , while fans and citizens welcomed the footballers in triumph.
An idyll that was broken at the most beautiful: a few months later, the Nazis came to power and the spell was broken . Adolf Hitler, in his perverse vision of the world, he saw professional football of Jewish origin, so he did everything he could to bring German football back to an amateur level. Bayern Munich , in addition, having the president and some other element of the staff of Jewish origin, was immediately labeled as “Judenklub” (Jewish club) and was forced to bury the few trophies won because the Nazis were constantly looking for ferrous material to produce the weapons: a thorny situation that led the coach Kohn to flee to Spain and to the resignation of Landauer.
After the Kristallnacht, the Crystal Night between 9 and 10 November 1938, about 30 thousand Jews were deported to the concentration camps of Dachau, Sachsenhausen and Buchenwald: among the deportees to Dachau, also in the land of Bavaria, there was also Kurt Landauer, but, thanks to his past as a soldier during the First World War, he was released after 33 days in captivity . While all but one of his brothers were murdered by the Nazis, he managed to emigrate to Switzerland .
Although in exile, Landauer was not forgotten: he is tied to the Swiss country, perhaps one of the most romantic moments in the history of the Bavarian club.Bayern Munich was in Geneva for a friendly match and, during the match, the players noticed their former president sitting in the stands. Regardless of the possible sanctions and risks of that provocative gesture, under the watchful eyes of the Gestapo generals, the boys approached the sidelines to greet and applaud Landauer .
It is said that in 1947, once the war was over, like many other persecuted people, Kurt already had the ticket in his pocket to rebuild a life in New York , but having passed through Munich, taken by second thoughts and affection for the city, he decided to stop and spend the following years. One of the few Jews that he decided to return to Germany,Landauer obtained, for the third time, the term of president of the Bavarian club which he honored until 1951, before dying 10 years later, on 21 December 1961 in the Schwabing hospital.
The story of Kurt Landauer has been forgotten for many decades, but it was above all the fans (who at the Allianz Arena have repeatedly dedicated a choreography) to bring back to life the memory of a brilliant figure in the history of the club: in 2005, on the pushed by Club Nr. 12 , an association of Bavarian supporters, the city council approved the proposal to name the street, near the Allianz-Arena, “Kurt-Landauer-Weg” . Some supporters even thought of renaming the stadium “Stadion am Kurt-Landauer-Weg”, but it did not have much response. Since 2006, however, the Kurt-Landauer-Pokal, a sporting event against racism, has been held every year
, promoted by the ultras Schickeria group. In 2009, however, on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Landauer’s birth, a commemoration took place near Baracca 8 of what remains of the Dachau concentration camp . Also present at the ceremony were representatives of TVS Maccabi Munchen , the local Jewish team which, in 2005, named its playing field after Kurt Landauer. In July 2014, a television drama entitled “Landauer – Der Prasident” was released in Germany.
