Maria Garcia Mendaro, the girlfriend of the brother of the confessed murderer, has closed today’s round of statements offering the same exculpatory version that she maintained during the investigation phase. This woman has assured that she was studying between a quarter past twelve and two in the morning on January 25 in Leon XIII’s apartment, where she later went to bed and only got up to open the door for her boyfriend, Javier Delgado, who I arrive at four in the morning.
During her stay in the apartment, Maria did not see Miguel Carcano or Marta del Castillo, but she did perceive when passing through the door of Miguel’s room, which remained closed, “a strange smell, not clean, but like that of the dirty mops from the bars.”
“Study until two. At that time I called Javi to tell him that he was going to sleep and, since he had left me the keys to the apartment, I told him to give me a ring on my mobile to open it, ”explained Maria Garcia. While she was studying, she says she heard “murmurs” in the street, but did not notice anyone banging on the windows of the apartment.
Around four, Javier arrived, with whom he exchanged a few words and went to bed. At half past four Javier received several phone calls from the parents of some of Marta’s friends. “There were at least four conversations. Something caught. They said that a girl had disappeared, she still did not know that her name was Marta, and that Miguel was the last one who had seen her. They wanted Javier to give them Miguel’s cell phone but he refused. He was a bit miffed at the tone in which they were speaking to him.”
A while later the parents of Marta’s friends show up at the house. Javier opens them but Maria stays inside the room because at that moment she didn’t have clothes to go out.
Afterward, Maria continued to sleep until she got up between seven and eight o’clock to attend an exam for some oppositions of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), to which she went in the company of a friend. She finished the exam at eleven o’clock and returned to Leon XIII, where she ate with her boyfriend. When he left, he stayed studying in the company of another student, who stated during the instruction that he smelled a clean smell on the floor and that he had to ask Maria twice to close the windows.
“I don’t remember that he did it that way, although he declared it later,” said the young woman, who maintains that in the house she could smell tobacco because both she and Javier smoke a lot, “and more so during exam periods.”
While they were studying, two policemen from the Homicide group arrived and asked him to inspect the house. “They looked under the beds and in Miguel’s room and took the data. I called Javi before to tell him, but he didn’t pick up the phone and let the police in.”
Just after the police left, Cuco appeared at the house, coming to pick up some CDs. “He asked about Miguel and I told him he wasn’t there. He told me he was going to get some CDs and I let him pass. He told me that in the neighborhood there was a very fat mess because people accused Miguel of Marta’s disappearance.
Maria has admitted knowing that there was a blood pressure monitor, adhesive tape and insulating tape in the house, but not a wheelchair. “I’m being silly, but I didn’t realize there was a wheelchair there.”
The prosecutor has concluded her interrogation by asking her the same question as the rest of the defendants. “Maria, where is Marta’s body
“, To which the young woman responded like the rest of her: “I don’t know.”
