Often the process of obtaining a passport in Italy is long and complicated. To cope with this, the State Police has made available a service known as the Electronic Passport Agenda Online. It is a partale, which allows the booking of appointments at the police station for the delivery of documentation and the release of fingerprints , which are essential for issuing a new passport.
In this article you will find a step-by-step guide for booking an appointment and advice on what to do in case it is impossible to book (due to malfunctions or full calendar).

How to apply for an online passport
First of all we specify that it is not possible to request and obtain a passport by doing everything from home; you have to go to the police station at least once to issue your fingerprints and present the documentation.

It is not possible to obtain a passport without physically going to the police station , except in extraordinary cases (serious certified health problems). Subsequently there must be a second appointment at the police station to collect the document, unless you choose to receive it by post.
The Online Agenda service therefore serves to speed up the registration of citizen data and to make an appointment at the police station. Below you will find the step-by-step guide for registering on the portal and booking an appointment.

  1. Connect to the website www.passaportonline.poliziadistato.it and click on Access for citizens.
  2. A new page will open, you will have to click on register and fill in the form with your personal data, your residential address, telephone number, email, etc. It is mandatory to fill in all fields with the asterisk symbol . Once you have entered all the required data, click on Next (bottom right) and then on OK.
  3. Set your password that you will need to access your account, also choosing a secret question (with an attached answer) that you can use in case of loss of access data. Click on Next first and then on OK.
  4. To complete the registration you will need to confirm your identity by typing the answer relating to the control question found in the green box (eg What is your email). Click on Confirm and then OK to complete the operation.
  5. Your account has been created , click on Back to login to be directed to the home page where you can log in with your social security number and password. Click on the magnifying glass icon to search for available commissariats in your province of residence.

Impossible to book: tips and urgent procedure Initially
, the online agenda would have simplified the issuance of passports. However, the service to date is not very efficient. Many users complain of exhausting times for booking appointments, especially in large municipalities. Often the calendar is full due to the huge amount of requests, moreover in the past there have been technical malfunctions that made booking impossible.
Here are some useful tips for dealing with these issues.

  • What is the best time to access the diary
The site does not allow booking of appointments well in advance, generally you can only book in the 4 weeks following the time you consult the diary. Therefore you have to be faster than the others to find a free date. The advice is to access the site in the morning. The service is active from 8:00 onwards, therefore the only way is to try to access the portal by 8:05.
  • What to do if there are no dates available in the calendar
It is possible that the calendar is full even by accessing the recommended time. In these cases the only thing to do is to insist for several days. Many users succeed after several attempts; it may take several months for you to be able to book. Therefore you just have to arm yourself with good patience and try again day after day.
  • What to do in case of malfunctions
In these cases, the advice is to repeat the procedure using different internet browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, etc.)
  • How long does it take to make the passport
When it is better to try the first booking

Unfortunately it is not possible to know in advance how long it takes to obtain the passport. Considering the problems described above, it is advisable to take action to request a passport at least 6 months before the departure date (better still a year before).
  • What to do if after months you are unable to book
If you are unable to book online, the only thing to do is to go directly to the police station to find out if there are the conditions to activate the emergency procedure, bringing with you any air and hotel booking receipts.
