Where they are
The Grenadine Islands (often called Saint Vincent & Grenadines) are located in the heart of the Caribbean group of the Lesser Antilles , specifically between Saint Lucia and Grenada, and are obviously bathed by the Caribbean Sea. Within the archipelago there are 125 islands, including the largest island of Saint Vincent (located in the northernmost part), the Grenadines proper (with an area of only 45 sq km) and other smaller islands. small, scattered between Saint Vincent and Grenada. Administratively, the Grenadines are divided into six units or six parishes: the Parish of Saint George (in which the capital, Kingstown, the main center of the whole country is located), that of Charlotte, of the Grenadines, of Saint Andrew, of Saint David and that of Saint Patrick.
How to get
- From Milan or Rome : from Italy it is difficult to find direct flights to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. One option could be to take a direct flight to the United States (e.g. to New York) and then take a second direct flight to ET Joshua, the main airport of Saint Vincent. From here, if you are staying on a secondary island of the archipelago, it will then be necessary to make the transfer by sea. Flights from Rome from € 566.00 – Flight from Milan from € 625.00
- From the main European capitals : the same thing is valid starting from some of the main European capitals: direct flight to the United States and subsequent flight to Saint Vincent. The main airlines that allow connections between the American continent and the Grenadines are American Airlines, Delta, US Airways and Air Jamaica.

- Climate : tropical throughout the year, with the alternation of two seasons, the dry and the wet (or rainy). Precipitation is therefore quite abundant for most of the year (keep in mind that in the capital alone 2,000 mm of rain can be recorded over a 12-month period), and occur mostly in the form of showers and strong thunderstorms. they do not last long, soon leaving the place in the sun. Despite this, temperatures never show big changes between one month and another so much that they generally remain constant between 24 ° and 32 ° C, consequently, even the sea temperature is always very pleasant, since it never drops. below 27 ° C (in August it can even reach 29 °).
- Best period : and between February and April, when rainfall is more contained and the climate is much less sultry.
- Period to avoid : in the summer months, especially between August and October, when there is a risk of the feared tropical hurricanes (although the Grenadines are located in the southern part of the Caribbean, where these phenomena are much more contained).
- Advice : bring light clothing with you for sunny days on the beach, but also sweatshirts or sweaters for the windiest evenings or days. Among the things that you just cannot fail to bring with you, a k-way, an umbrella, waterproof sneakers, swimsuit, flip-flops, but also a camera with its case, hat and sunscreen, a scarf to shelter you from the wind and a insect repellent (which you can buy directly on site). Finally, don’t forget your rubber-soled shoes at home to avoid discomfort walking near the coral reef.
Which island to go to
The islands that make up the archipelago are 125 large and small. The three most important, however, are:
- Saint Vincent : is the main island, where the capital, Kingstown, is also located. Here, among colonial buildings and stalls of fish, rum and chocolate, you can savor the typical Caribbean atmosphere. The island is chosen by tourists above all for its convenience, since it boasts the main airport of the archipelago which allows direct connections with the continent, but also for nightlife and its naturalistic beauties, not only sea and beaches. but also waterfalls and historical sites surrounded by greenery.
- Bequia : another fairly large island in the archipelago and Bequia, very popular with tourists due to the wide range of idyllic beaches it offers. For this reason, some of the most beautiful resorts in all of the Grenadines are located here. Getting there is quite simple, from the island of Saint Vincent there are direct air connections with Bequia airport, but also by sea (departures in this case depart from the port of Kingstown).
- Tobago Cays : Perhaps not among the largest in the archipelago, Tobago Cays is actually a group of five practically uninhabited atolls, with the exception of some lodgings for fishermen and adventure-loving travelers who are not afraid of “spartan” accommodations . The particularity of this little corner of paradise, however, is the presence of a huge marine park, probably the most beautiful in the Caribbean Sea. To get there you need to take a boat from the port of Kingstown (the islets are so small that they don’t have their own airport) but, once you get here, we are sure you will never want to leave.
What to see and what to do: beaches and places of interest
- Kingstown : the capital. We have already talked about it extensively in the previous paragraph, but we would still like to point out some places of interest that are worth visiting once in the city, among these the Fort Charlotte which was built in 1806 and dominates from above stands out. the view; the colonial buildings, typical of this part of the world; finally, the Cathedral of St. Mary, an extraordinary mix of Romanesque, Moorish and Gothic architectural elements.
- Baleine Waterfall : also on the island of Saint Vincent, is an 18 meter high waterfall under which a natural lake is created where you can cool off.
- La Soofriere Volcano : also this on the island of Saint Vincent. It is a volcanic crater with a height of 1,200 meters, from which you can contemplate a crazy view of the island. We recommend that you equip yourself with suitable hiking boots to visit it.
- Richmond Beach : the famous volcanic black sand beach where it is impossible not to stop, if only to take some nice shots in such a particular location.
- Leeward Highway : Scenic stretch of road, which runs between coconut plantations, past villages and volcanic beaches and connects the capital to Richmond Beach.
- Lower Bay : very popular beach on the island of Bequia, frequented mainly by snorkelers and scuba divers attracted by the seabed and golden sand.
- Princess Margaret : Also on the island of Bequia, Princess Margaret is considered by many to be the most enchanting beach on the island. This title is mainly due to the wild state that distinguishes it, along the shore there is only a small kiosk for lunch, for the rest it is just lush nature.
- Old Hegg Sanctuary : it is a sanctuary dedicated to sea turtles, victims of irresponsible tourism for years and of plastic that is thrown without regard into the sea.
- Tobago Cays Marine Park : south of the Grenadine archipelago, these five atolls are immersed in a natural park of extraordinary beauty. In fact, near the shore, the water is shallow and perfect for snorkeling in search of tropical fish. Further offshore, on the other hand, there are real coral gardens inhabited by rays, barracudas, sea turtles, etc.
- Petit Saint Vincent : it is a very secluded islet, protected from view between bays and coral reefs. If you want to withdraw from the rest of the world at least for a couple of days, know that there are no telephones or televisions here.
How much does a holiday in the Grenadines cost
Prices, offers and advice
A holiday in the Grenadines is not exactly a type of holiday that could be defined as low cost, however some tricks to save will allow you to enjoy a dream experience without spending too much money. In fact, the main cost is certainly the plane ticketwhich must be booked well in advance, also to be able to better manage the stopovers (necessary to reach the archipelago). As for the accommodations, however, there are different types that can vary from apartments (very cheap, about € 15 per night per person) to luxury resorts (which can cost hundreds of euros): so depending on how much you are willing to adapt and to the type of holiday you are looking for, the costs can be more or less contained. (In some cases, through a flight + hotel package you could find comfortable and advantageous solutions at the same time , but you may have to search the web frequently before finding an attractive offer.)
A similar argument also concerns the costs for meals: the cost of living in the Grenadines is basically low, but on the islands there are solutions for all budgets, from street food to chic restaurants. Everything will depend on your choices.
