This is the Dream World Cup dedicated to patients with mental illnesses which took place in Rome at PalaTiziano from 13 to 16 May. .
Italy against Ukraine, Hungary, Uruguay, Peru, France and finally Chile: this is the path that led the Italian team to the final victory and the conquest of the title of World Champions.
A success that brings the Italian flag high and that today is praised by many sides, not only for having won the world competition but also and above all for having shown that on the field we are all equal and we all have the same chances.
The tournament was created precisely for this purpose: to use sport as a tool for social reintegration. An idea that still has a few years of life but which has already met with enormous consensus and has also inspired important initiatives, such as the publication of a book and a docufilm entitled Crazy for Football. The latter also won the David di Donatello award last year as “best documentary of 2017 and the Uefa Foundation for Children Awards”.
This year, then, also falls on the 40th anniversary of theBasaglia law which abolished asylums. What better way to celebrate than with a victory

Each of them has a sad story to tell related to depression, schizophrenia or disorders bipolar.
Ruben and the captain. When he was 12, following an accident, his father was paralyzed and from that moment the boy’s mind became estranged, perhaps not to face the pain, causing him depression and difficulty interacting.
Luis Alberto and the goalkeeper. Depression and problems with physical contact are his difficulties, which however did not prevent him from becoming the defender of the team goal, which he also protects with a dislocated finger (as happened last year at the World Cup!)
Christian , known as the king of dribbles, and with his natural talent also managed to impress our Francesco Totti who admitted he was unable to do the same.
Ruggero is the player who more than others had difficulties in approaching 5-a-side football. He started almost from scratch but today he is strong and determined like the others, driven by a great desire to make it at any cost.
Enrico , known as the bomber, who joined the team with the fear of approaching others and a tendency towards isolation, now plays casually without fear.
Sam, Nigerian, he integrated well into the group despite the fact that when he arrived he felt “a great confusion in his head”. Sport and the team help him a lot to focus on the game and forget the voices that resonate within him.
Antonio , the chatterbox of the group, did not think about it even for a moment when he heard on TV that people like him were looking for to form a team that would play worldwide.
And finally Silvio , calm and orderly, has decided to fight his schizophrenia with 5-a-side football and with truly surprising results.
Here are our boys, world champions, who had already managed to conquer the podium with a well-deserved third place in Japan from the very first tournament.
Today they are the symbol of how you can face fear and difficulties with play and team spirit. And it is also thanks to their coach, Enrico Zanchini , who encourages them, encourages them and pushes them to always give their best.
Because psychiatric illness must be tackled by all means, as the doctor who is treating the players underlines who states:
There is certainly a benefit in playing football. These kids become absolutely normal by playing. People who can’t be touched because they have phobias hug each other here, throw themselves into the mud. A miracle
No, instead of being closed in a phobia, the head is simply open to let the body go and play football
