How to visit Grand Canyon: where to sleep, itineraries and how to get around
Main itineraries
The park occupies a very large area and it is impossible to see everything in the same day .
Usually tourists decide to visit only the part closest to the city where they are staying; others decide to dedicate more days so as to be able to see at least two areas.
Lovers of hiking and trekking are the ones who stay longer in the Grand Canyon as they walk for several days following the various trails.
Here are the itineraries we recommend :
- South Rim Grand Canyon : one or two days to discover the main points of the park by car or bus. Usually you go along Hermit Road and stop at Trailview Overlook, Maricopa Point, Powell Point, Hopi Point, Mohave Point, The Abyss, Monument Creek Vista, Pima Point, Hermits Rest.
The advice is to stay at least one night in the park to be able to witness the sunrise and sunset. - North Rim Grand Canyon : for those who want to see wild nature and uncrowded places. One day is enough if you do not go trekking to visit the Bright Angel Point and travel the Cape Royal Road stopping at the various viewpoints and take the Cape Royal path.
- North and South Grand Canyon : it takes at least 3 days and 2 nights to visit both sides. The first day you will visit the North Rim, then with a shuttle organized by the park, in 4 hours you will reach the South where you will stay overnight and the following day you will visit the main attractions
- West Rim Grand Canyon can be visited starting from Las Vegas in a day and allows you to see the Skywalk and Guano Point, as well as fly over the Canyon with a scenic flight.
- Entire Grand Canyon : It takes at least 4 days to visit the entire park. The first day we visit the North part, then we move to the South and finally we reach the West Rim Grand Canyon.
Where to sleep
The most suitable places to stay are hotels and campsites inside the park , which are the most expensive but also those that are the first to overbook.
In the South Rim there are 3 campsites and 7 resorts , alternatively if there is no place you can choose the facilities a few km from the entrance or stay overnight in Williams which is 100 km away or Tuba City at 95 km.
In the North Rim, however, there are only 1 camping and 1 hotel to book well in advance. Or you can stay in structures at 20/30 km (also often full) or in the town of Kanab at 125 km.
Finally, within the West Rim the only structure is the Hualapai Ranchbut visitors often arrive from Las Vegas in the day or sleep in Kingman about 110km from the entrance.
How to get around
Although in the less crowded periods it is possible to enter the North and South area with your own car, it is advisable to always move around the park with the free shuttle shuttles that make stops and continuous stops that allow you to get off and on when you want .
These buses are also suitable for those with disabilities or wheelchairs.
For the West Rim, however, it is always necessary to use the shuttles provided by the Park and leave the car outside.
To move from the North to the South entrance there are daily shuttles that take 4 hours, while to reach the West you need to have your own car.
How much does it cost to visit the Grand Canyon
Prices, offers and advice
The visit of the Grand Canyon, like that of other American parks, is quite expensive especially if you decide to stay inside and make the various excursions by helicopter, horseback or with the panoramic aircraft.
The best thing if you intend to save and book well in advance and sleep in the facilities just outside the parks. If you want to go on excursions, consider that the panoramic flights cost approximately € 200.00 / € 250.00 per person.
If you are staying in Las Vegas it may be convenient to join group tours.
