We often hear about free radicals, but what exactly is it? A
free radical means an atom or a molecule whose external orbit is characterized by a strong instability due to the presence of an unpaired electron. Due to the strong instability the atoms try to return to equilibrium by subtracting an electron from other nearby atoms or molecules. In other words, free radicals are real roaming mines inside the organism that can create processes that are harmful to the organism, causing oxidative stress of the cells, or a premature aging of the tissues. This deterioration affects not only the skin, but also the heart and blood cells. Over time, heart disease, arthritis and less activity of the adrenal glands can occur.

How to defend yourself from free radicals
The most frequent causes that cause the emergence of free radicals are stress, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and above all the sun. In fact, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays causes the formation of very harmful free radicals.
Especially in summer, a season in which there is prolonged exposure to sunlight, it is important to prepare the skin adequately and preventively.

  1. Carrots contain a large amount of Beta -carotene, one of the most effective antioxidants able to counteract the onset of free radicals. In the absence of Vitamin A , the body automatically converts Beta-Carotene into this important vitamin. In addition to carrots, Beta-Carotene is abundantly present in squash, peppers and apricots.
  2. Coenzyme Q , or Vitamin Q , is very important in the prevention of heart diseases, as it is an effective remedy against the oxidation of membrane lipids and for its preventive action against LDL cholesterol. In general, it performs anti-aging and antioxidant actions.
  3. Tomatoes contain high quantities of Lycopene, a carotenoid which, similarly to Beta – carotene, has an antioxidant action, capable of preventing prostate cancer. In case of prolonged exposure to the sun, Lycopene exerts a protective action against ultraviolet rays.
  4. Copper is present in all organisms and its main function is to facilitate the assimilation of iron, but it also induces the formation of collagen capable of preventing the formation of wrinkles and inducing relaxation of the skin tissues.
  5. The best characteristics of Aloe Vera are expressed right on the skin. It prevents skin inflammation and is able to effectively counteract dermatitis. Being a powerful antiseptic and antibiotic, it prevents the action of biotic factors on the dermis.

Other useful tips
If you want to spend many hours exposing your skin to the sun’s rays, remember to avoid the hottest time slots, especially between 12 and 16, and to protect your skin with effective products . In fact, exposing yourself to the sun without protection, as well as causing the emergence of free radicals, can cause chapping and burns.
