Over the years, wallpaper adheres to the walls and removing it is not always easy, especially if it was applied a long time ago. Today, in fact, the models on the market are specifically designed to be easily replaced and adapt to a modern or contemporary home. First you need to prepare the room by spreading a protective sheet for the flooring, you can help us with electrical tape to fix it. It is important to remember to also cover the sockets with plastic to keep liquids out.

There are different types of wallpaper, each of which requires certain measures for removal. Understanding it is easy: just take a small pointed knife and insert it under the layer of paper. If you peel off in one piece, the paper is removable and it will be easy to take it off. If there is a slight film left, you are faced with a vinyl wallpaperand it will be a bit more complex to remove. If, on the other hand, you cannot remove it with your hands and it tears into many small pieces, it is a traditional wallpaper and you can only remove it with professional products or steam systems. Let’s see in detail how to do it, case by case.

Moisten the wall with a mixture of water and vinegar , then pull a flap of the paper with your hands, it should come off easily. Proceed with the same system for each sheet of paper. Once completely removed, clean the wallwith hot water and dry with a cloth. This treatment is also suitable for plasterboard walls, but be careful not to wet them too much: the water could damage them.

Also in this case it is necessary to moisten the wall with water and vinegar and remove the paper one sheet at a time . After that, however, a thin layer of paper will remain on the wall: to remove it, wet the surface with plenty of water and leave it to act for a few minutes. Then help yourself with a flat iron spatula to detach the layer of paper. It may be necessary to wet the wall several times to complete the work. Finally wash the wallto eliminate glue residues. This technique is not suitable for plasterboard walls because it requires a lot of water: better to prefer the steam technique described below.

We are facing the most complex type of paper to remove, but it is not impossible! First you need to get the specific detaching product for this operation in a DIY store . Then sand the wall with a special brush which, by creating small holes, allows the liquid to be absorbed by the surface. Using a painter’s roller, spread the product over the entire wall. Wait about 15 minutes then peel off the paper with oneflat trowel . It may be necessary to repeat the operation several times. Finally wash the wall and dry with a cloth. In case of plasterboard walls it is necessary to use a steam engine.
HOUZZ | Grand Design London Case 4: plasterboard walls, the steam technique
The steam engine is used after sanding. Thanks to the hot steam , the glue melts and comes off easily. It is advisable to proceed on one part at a time rather than on the whole surface. This technique is the only option if the wall is plasterboard because, as already mentioned, the water could ruin it.
Once removed you can have fun decorating the wall as you like!
