From 10 June, a new Italian TV series, Curon, lands on Netflix, set in the suggestive scenery of the artificial lake of Resia with its submerged bell tower The town of Cutron
Curon today is a small mountain town on the borders with Switzerland and Austria, but surely everyone will remember the image of a submerged bell tower, which emerges from the green waters of a lake. This is the artificial lake Resia, created about 70 years ago. The inhabitants were moved upstream and, in the place of the small village of Curon, an artificial lake was built. It is in this scenario that the new Netflix series , written by Ezio Abbate, comes to life. The legend
The 1357 bell tower that emerges from the lake remains of the ancient town of Curon, whose origins date back to the Celtic populations who inhabited these places in pre-Roman times. Some locals swear that bells can be heard tolling on winter nights, which, however, were removed in 1950 just before the flooding. In 1951, a year after the construction of the reservoir, a bus with 23 people on board went off the road and crashed into the lake; there will be only one survivor.
And it is precisely the legend and the mystery that revolve around the bell tower that inspired the creators of the Netflix series. At a certain point one of the protagonists reveals to another character the legend according to which whoever hears the tolling of the bell tower, now devoid of bells, will soon be struck by certain death.Between history and myth
The vicissitudes of the small town have their roots in history. In 1348, a few years before the construction of the church of Santa Caterina, the plague hit these places hard. In the eighteenth century the area remained under water due to the flooding of a stream, while in the nineteenth century the lake of Curon overflowed causing considerable damage. Today Curon Venosta is a tourist resort linked to skiing and hiking and has made its semi-submerged bell tower an attraction for visitors. In winter, the lake freezes completely and it is possible to reach the bell tower on foot. Marco Balzano’s book
It is not the first time that the bell tower rising from the water has inspired someone: Marco Balzano had chosen it for the cover of his book “ I rest here“. The book by the author who won the Campiello in 2015 is also set in the submerged village of Curon. The bell tower that towers over the water of what looks like a lake and which instead is a disused dam strikes anyone who passes by. As the author himself stated in an interview , “it is an image that at first sight arouses astonishment and then leaves room for growing anxiety. It is realized that if there is a bell tower around them there must have been a community, women and men, roots. Then you lean out from the pier and, if you are lucky, you can still see the foundations of the farms, the dark grass and the sand. We never had any doubts that the cover should have this image. ” “Rest here” by Marco Balzano, a novel about human existence
Looking at it closely, “I stay here” could be summed up simply by quoting the title, to which perhaps just to put an imprint I would add the personal pronoun: I remain here.
