Furnishing your home with creativity without spending large sums and in absolute respect for nature is possible thanks to the new trend of up-cyclingthat is the art of giving new life to obsolete objects and renewing their functionality. More than a fashion, a real craze that has been having a great success directly from the States for some time now also in Europe. The concept of giving aesthetic value to objects of little value, often destined to weigh down the already saturated waste collection and disposal system, is the clear demonstration of a green lifestyle choice and an approach to furniture that focuses on the essential without being conditioned from big brands and fashions imposed by the market. The motto of wasting less and recycling more is perhaps entering the philosophy of interior design even if no doubt environmental sustainability in some cases can be considered in some way a snobbish attitude. But beyond these ethical considerations,eco-friendly respecting the world around us, using natural products in an eco-sustainable way are certainly not harmful ideas, quite the contrary. In addition, the creative and manual aspect of do-it-yourself must be considered, which stimulates the imagination, takes advantage of manual skills and gives a lot of satisfaction. Many solutions that adapt to what everyone is able to do, from the simplest to the most ambitious projects: the important thing is to try recycling while having fun. The pallet: what it is and how to choose
it For those who don’t already know it, the pallet is one of the main sources of inspiration in the sector of creative recycling and sustainable furniturebecause it is easily available even at no cost and is particularly adaptable to multiple uses. It will have happened to you who knows how many times, in front of supermarkets or near the garbage bins in your city, to see these rough wooden slatted structures, generally with a rectangular or square perimeter, varying in size between 80 and 120 cm and with thickness around 20 cm. The pallets, in Italian known as pallets, are nothing more than the platforms placed under the goods of supermarkets and shops to facilitate the transport phases of forklifts and the loading and unloading of trucks. They are very resistant structures because they are capable of supporting very high weights and having to withstand continuous bumps and jolts. Most of the time the pallets are unloaded from the overlying packages and reused by the transporters for subsequent deliveries, but it can happen that they are left temporarily abandoned outside the commercial establishments. It should be a good idea for the operator to call at this point whoever is responsible to collect them and take them for disposal, but in the meantime, if you happen to ask for one, you will see that they will be happy to discard them.
These old palletsthey can be easily transformed into furniture and furnishing accessories with a shabby style that is so popular on trade magazines. Clearly in the creative recycling of pallets there are some precautions in choosing the right pallet: in fact, first of all it is necessary to check that it is intact and does not present serious damage both in the support part and in the transverse axes, then you must try to understand if you are in the presence of paints or treatments that could be toxic to health. Finally, check if it is too dirty and therefore difficult to clean. How to proceed in the creative recycling of pallets
Regardless of the type of product you have in mind to build, once you have recovered a good pallet, it is necessary to proceed with some small, but indispensable, operations to better prepare it for the next creative phase. First you have to check if there are any protruding nails and if so, remove or screw them back until they are harmless. In fact, it can happen that the conveyors fix nails to better block the packaging of the goods. There may also be residues of plastic materials that are usually knotted at the base of the pallet , especially in the corners, but to remove these it takes very little. On the other hand, the most boring part of pallet recyclingand that of cleaning, which must be thorough and complete: with the help of an abrasive sponge and a solution of water and vinegar or, alternatively, water with Marseille soap, scrub all surfaces thoroughly and let them dry. Only after the wood is perfectly dry can you proceed with sanding, using a coarser grain in the first pass and a lighter one for a second, then dust with a soft cloth or brush. At this point the base is ready to be treated: you can leave the pallet natural, apply an oil-based impregnating paint or opt for a water-based color. All up-cycling ideas to reuse a simple pallet
But now we come to the funniest part, that is to see together what can be achieved thanks to the creative recycling of pallets in the search for a sustainable design . In Japanese furniture, the beds are made up of thin rolled mattresses that are spread directly on the tatami, the typical mat made of woven rice straw and covered in rush. So why not recreate a similar solution with pallets
Left in natural wood or painted white, the pallets are a perfect base to replace the traditional net. It is possible to proceed in two ways: vertically or horizontally.
If you prefer a more Zen version, then have four or six palletsdepending on the size, leaving a large exposed wooden edge in addition to the perimeter of the mattress. The bed is thus raised from the floor that minimum necessary to protect the rest from direct contact with the ground and the overall result is very elegant. If, on the other hand, you prefer that the bed is higher, then you can stack more pallets until you reach the desired height. In this case, however, it is better not to exceed on the sides and to proportion the wooden structure to the size of the mattress. An alternative is to use the palletfor the headboard by placing it against the wall and completing it with a bed with slatted base. Coordinated or even as elements to combine with a classic bed, perhaps in wrought iron or with a padded headboard in linen, the pallets can become nice bedside tables or shelves to place lampshades and books. The fruit boxes on the market are also perfect for the same purpose, also strictly made of wood. The juxtaposition of the palletthe softness of the fabrics and the comfort of relaxation also works for sofas and armchairs. With the pallets you can easily create high-performance living systems with very little effort. Their modular measures are perfect to be combined with ease and the type of light wood allows a quick assembly with simple screws. A foam rubber base for the seat, one for the backrest covered with fresh fabrics such as cotton and linen in neutral colors are more than enough to create a welcoming structure. A mountain of colored cushions of different sizes completes the final effect.
Even in the kitchen the use of palletsit can be very creative: just hang a pallet on a wall and turn it into a practical plate rack on which to store dishes and pans. Convenient metal hooks can then be added to hook the cups for breakfast. White or colored, it will undoubtedly give a rustic and familiar note to the whole environment. Another use that can be made of pallets is to create tables. Add a glass top that covers the entire surface and mount small wheels at the bottom of the pallet: it will be an elegant coffee table to be placed in the sofa area ready in a few simple steps. If, on the other hand, you have more ambitions, then you can arrange more overlapping elements until you reach the desired height to create a desk for the study or a computer holder. In recycling then everything is allowed: you can also recover the legs of an old table and mount them under the pallet to give life to a completely new table. In the garden and on the terrace, the recycled pallets seem to find their ideal habitat: armchairs, sofas, coffee tables and benches made with palletsof various sizes harmonize very well with the green and with the country style of the outdoors. In addition, they are easy to disassemble and possibly put away when the summer is coming to an end. One last idea on how to use a pallet in a whimsical way is to hang it on an external wall to create a small vertical garden where you can put succulent plants or aromatic herbs. In short, just surf the net a bit to find many other suggestions, even if the secret is to be inspired by your own imagination.
