August 2 . That is the date established for the European DNI to come into force . On that day, the member countries of the EU must comply with the EU Regulation 2019/1157 of the European Parliament and of the Council of June 20, 2019 on the reinforcement of the security of the identity documents of the citizens of the Union and the members of their families exercising their right to free movement, which forms part of the Commission’s 2016 Action Plan to tackle travel document fraud, incorporating document security measures such as identity cards and residence cards.
With a period of 2 months before the indicated date, Spain already complies with the criteria established in this European Regulation, progressively facilitating all citizens the new European format of electronic DNI 4.0 , which in addition to incorporating all the security measures and of usability of the previous 3.0 format, has a new design of the support itself, appearing the flag of the European Union with the acronym inside of the country that issues the document, and the indication of the title of National Identity Document in at least one other language Union official.
The European DNI is a new identity card that banishes the document known until now. It will be common in the 27 Member States of the European Union, to comply with the EU Regulation on strengthening the security of citizens’ identity documents.
The period of validity of the identity documents will be a minimum of five years and a maximum of ten years.
The new format was inaugurated by the Minister of the Interior on June 2 at the Documentation Unit of the Mostoles National Police Station (Madrid). ) and is being gradually implemented in all the Documentation Units throughout Spain so that next August all the Documentation Units will issue the new European electronic DNI format for all Spanish citizens.

How is the new European DNI processed

To request the new DNI it will be necessarymake an appointment online or by calling 060 (it works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year). The DNI can be renewed from 180 days before it expires and the launch of the Express DNI is planned. It will not be necessary to take a photograph, which will be done at the police station itself, and the payment of fees can be made by bank card.
