The Olympic Stadium of Baku of the European Championships 2020 is one of the 11 stadiums of this traveling and modern tournament, being the construction started in 2011 and completed in 2015. It is located in the capital of Azerbaijan and has a capacity of about 69000 seats. Being a modern complex, it also includes hotels, green spaces and even other elements that go beyond the single stadium.
This complex, which is the largest sports facility in all of Azerbaijan, hosted the Olympic Games in 2015 and this was the first time that the stadium has hosted this type of sporting event. In 2019, it also hosted the Europa League final between Chelsea and Arsenal, won by Maurizio Sarri’s Blues.
Being one of the venues of the championshipsEuropean Championships 2020 , obviously complies with all the regulations relating to the stadiums established by UEFA, FIFA and the IAAF. It was built by SOCAR, the public oil company of Azerbaijan, which evidently saw fit to invest in football.
It is on the whole built in a modern architectural style and is used, in most cases, by the Azerbaijani national. The structure is very impressive and extends for 60 meters in height, on 6 floors. Despite the modernity of the construction, we can see references to the Azerbaijani tradition, especially in the presence of 5 cylindrical shapes of the stadium, which are inspired by the Tower of the Virgin.
It was ranked as the seventh best stadium in the world by STadiumDB.
