Route up to the Sierra del Viso, towards the Mojon hill in the mountain town of Santa Olalla del Cala in Huelva. Hike of a demanding and difficult nature since it will go from 537 meters that the town has to 847 meters.
The route can be easily started by parking the car in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. From here there is no loss, we take the Pharmacy seen from the front as a reference and we take the street to the left. We pass the Caja Rural leaving it on the right and from here we continue along this avenue without taking any kind of detour. The walker will pass by the old Town Hall and the Plaza dal Llanete, a picturesque and pleasant place in the town. We continue straight on sighting the Castle-Fortress of Sancho IV el grande, which reigns from the height next to the Church of Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion. At the end of the street we turn left. From here we do not take any detour until we enter the indications for another of the routes in the town, that of the Minas del Teuler.
We continue along this paved road that with the passage of meters will become a rural road. You have to go down between curves until you reach a small bridge that is flanked by olive orchards and the Limon stream. We follow the path in a first uphill until we reach a crossroads. To the right we would make the so-called path of the station, to the left we would arrive at Las Piteras and in turn to the road that connects Santa Olalla with Zufre. This time we are going to continue straight (in Google Maps it appears as the road from Santa Olalla to Corteconcepcion).
You have to walk approximately one kilometer to reach a path that goes to the right. This is where the good stuff begins: the ascent to the cairn. To make this ascent you have to have your legs trained and your heart and lungs bulletproof. What continues is not flat. We start fully in the ascent at 100 meters of this path. A steep slope in a straight line and with dirt and gravel will delight the most adventurous. There is no respite, it is an absolute incline up to a small flat area that with work allows you to recover some air.
The height begins to be noticed in the breath. The fields begin to be seen from above. Olive groves, holm oaks and cork oaks will make the new climb that faces us enjoyable. Another climb. This time a little less inclined but longer and rougher. The climb will have the first reward: a viewpoint from which you can already see the town and the castle from above. The dimension of the rise begins to be palpable both physically and visually.
A break and keep going. This slope has uphill, and flattening, uphill, and flattening. So until you reach an area that seems straight and without apparent complications, but it is nothing more than an illusion. It continues to rise. We arrive at a curve to the left with a somewhat less complex area. We pass by strawberry trees and a small forest on the left that is impressive. A little more and you come to a curved climb with a lot of inclination from which you can already see the end of the path. We arrive at the Mojon and the spectacular viewpoint that we have from which you can see Zufre, Corteconcepcion, Puerto Moral, Cala and El Real de la Jara.
The views of the town at more than 300 meters above the town are a more than justifiable reward for climbing up here. The vultures practically fly at the same height as you (there are vulture nests nearby) and the black and royal kites roam freely as lookouts for the Sierra del Viso. The return, you can imagine, down, down, and down and back to the origin. Don’t be in a hurry to go down. Enjoy the views and the flora and fauna of the place.
