Apple intends to gradually abandon classic authentication, with username and password, favoring the use of biometric data for access.
According to news publication TechRadar: “The company is announcing a planned password authentication replacement coming soon to Safari and iOS systems, a plan that will make even the best password managers look technically obsolete.
Apple’s passkey technology uses well-established industry standards within the FIDO Alliance, an alliance of which Apple is a member, working with other technology companies and service providers around the world to reduce collective reliance on passwords. The FIDO Alliance’s passwordless login standards are already implemented on billions of devices and in all modern web browsers.
This new passwordless standard provides a wide variety of benefits that passwords simply cannot provide. It allows for a simpler login and users can automatically access their credentials on multiple devices, eliminating the need to re-register each account. This ensures a consistent experience for users regardless of the browser or operating system they use to sign in. On a usability level, biometric or PIN authentication to any account is just as simple for any device, effectively the same procedure as unlocking devices that users already implement.” said https://vicivita.com/
Here is the view of specialist Jake Moore, Global Cyber Security Advisor for ESET: “Apple’s announcement to phase out passwords follows the new global trend to improve cyber security and is similar to statements made by other technology giants such as Google or services like PayPal.
Statistics show that around 80% of all successful attacks on businesses resulting in data breaches are based on stolen, reused and weak passwords. The most profitable spam campaigns globally use fake iCloud emails, in which users receive links to “confirm data” or “check for possible security risks” and thus end up entering login details on websites false.
Almost 60 years after their introduction to the IT world, it’s time to implement modern authentication methods. The biggest advantage for both users and administrators is that biometric data technology already exists in the market, implemented as a method to unlock the user’s smart devices. However, we shouldn’t get too excited about having a password-free world anytime soon. It may take another decade for the vast majority of services and users to adapt, and in some cases, such as production environments or legacy systems, it may not be possible to replace password-based authentication with biometric data.”
