Because the voice of a bishop is more interesting than that of the Vatican
To answer this question, we must first read what the bishop in question said and then the Vatican, on the same subject. We are obviously talking about Sanremo.
“The painful performance of the first singer once again mocked and profaned the sacred signs of the Catholic faith, evoking the gesture of Baptism in a dull and desecrating context. The passage presented, already in the title – Sunday – and in the context of a gospel choir, alluded to the day of the Lord, celebrated by Christians as the day of faith and resurrection, placing it in an environment of words, attitude and gestures, not only offensive to religion, but above all to the dignity of man. It is not surprising, however, that the dramatic artistic poverty constantly resorts to makeshift means to make people talk about the character and the event as a whole. Undecided whether to intervene or not, at first I thought it was convenient not to give further evidence to such an indecent havoc, but then I felt that it is more necessary to give a voice to many believers, humble and good, offended in the most cherished values to protest against continuous and ignoble attacks on the faith; I felt it my duty to denounce once again how the public service cannot and should not allow such situations, still hoping that, at an institutional level, someone will intervene; I felt it was clear that one cannot declare oneself believing Catholics and then endorse and organize similar exhibitions; Finally, I felt that it is important and urgent to stem the serious educational drift that threatens especially the youngest with the ostentation of inadequate models. I am aware that my protest will find little echo in the media world dominated by the single thought, but I am even more certain that it will reach clean and courageous hearts, capable of reacting in everyday life to such rampant and poisonous aggressions. Above all, I am convinced that I have to fulfill my duty as a pastor so that the Christian people, also entrusted to my care, do not suffer scandal from a silence interpreted as indifference or, even worse, acquiescence. “.
Therefore, with the same ploy of a well-known electoral campaign in which a candidate, later defeated, refused to name his contender, the bishop never names the singer who desecrated the baptism in Sanremo.
And the Vatican
Here is what the Osservatore Romano, the newspaper of the Holy See, wrote about it: “Called upon by Fiorello whose sympathy cannot be resisted, here we are to have our say, as requested, on Achille Lauro.Tiptoed. Why Sanremo and Sanremo. The Observer and the Observer. And in this case he limits himself to observing that, wanting to be transgressive at all costs, the singer has referred to the Catholic imagination. Nothing new. There has not been a more transgressive message in history than that of the Gospel. From this point of view we will hardly forget the recitation of the Our Father, on his knees, by a great rock artist like David Bowie. There are no more offenders than once ”.
The style lesson of the newspaper of the Holy See, especially in matters of transgressiveness and quality, is considerable and evident. And David Bowie’s name is not one of those known only in the sacristies. Yet the text of the Osservatore Romano does not appear on many front pages of national newspapers, as it deserves, to make people understand how to discuss and what weight to give to entertainment but also to the search for a common register and a high level of protest. The bishop’s text, on the other hand, is taken up everywhere, probably because it speaks to those who feel the need to divide themselves between Guelphs and Ghibellines, round heads and pointed heads.
