MILAN – Van Gogh is one of the most loved painters in the history of art. Vincent van Gogh , was born on March 30, 1853 in Groot Zundert (Holland) and can be considered the pioneer of contemporary art, father of Expressionism and emblem of the tormented artist. If his life had been a novel, he would have been one of those exaggerated, breaking characters, always on the edge.
His works are true world icons. The Yellow House (1888), Vincent’s Room in Arles (1888), The Starry Night (1889), the Sunflowers (1889) are some of the works that the whole world knows. The colors of his paintings are breathtaking. In short, a myth, a star who if he had lived in this era, would have conquered the world media.READ ALSO: Van Gogh anniversary, products inspired by the master of color Vincent Van Gogh: 10 things to discover THE CUT EAR
The self mutilation of the left ear could actually reveal the revenge of a “friend”. According to some historical researchers it was Paul Gauguin who cut off part of the lobe (and not the whole ear). The two lived together for a while and used to fight. It may not, therefore, be a gesture of madness.
. CANDLES
To paint at night Van Gogh often wore a straw hat with lighted candles placed in the brim or fastened with some clothespins. The “starry” night was one of the painter’s sources of inspiration: “I often have the impression that the night is much more alive and richly colored than the day” he wrote in a letter to his brother Theo.
. THE STARRY NIGHT
One of the artist’s most famous works was painted from the window of a hospital: that of Saint Paul de Mausole, near Saint Remy, where the same painter asked to be hospitalized in May 1889
.. THE NAME
Vincent Van Gogh inherits the name of his stillborn little brother.
. SHORT BUT INTENSE
I began to paint only at the age of 27, despite this he was very prolific: there are about 900 paintings (on average 2 a week) and 1100 drawings made before his death, at 37.
. THE VAN GOGH YELLOW
The “chrome yellow” – the stylistic code that distinguishes the artist – an example are the Sunflowers or The Arles room, it must have been much more brilliant when it was spread on canvas. Over time, this unstable and faded pigment.
. “UGLY, DIRTY AND …”.
Jeanne Calment, a Frenchwoman from Arles who met him in her shop, described him as “dirty, badly dressed and unpleasant, not at all polite and sick. They called him ‘crazy’.
. WANNABE
Before attempting a career as a painter I try to become a master and an art dealer. PHOTO
The photo shown here may be the only shot to immortalize Van Gogh. The image dates back to 1887. The painter did not like being photographed. For the experts of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam the man in the photograph would not be the artist, because he does not resemble him.
. SUICIDE OR MURDER
According to the book “Van Gogh: The Life,” written by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith, biographers and Pulitzer Prize winners, Van Gogh did not commit suicide but was killed by a local boy. The artist was against suicide and also no gunpowder was found on his hands, nor was the weapon used.
